my mother thinks im nuts

i was at my folks house for dinner last pm and my mom, who loves talking about bodily functions at the dinner table (seriously), said she is always constipated and has had this problem her whole life. i told her that i have had that problem off and on too but ever since i went back to eating more TF, lots of butter, grassfed milk and cream, meat ect. i have not had any constipation. mom just looked at me like i had escaped from the asylum and said "do you just do these things to be different?". i find this amusing because she and my dad have always been foodies in various ways. my mom was a hardcore macrobiotic for many years of my early childhood and my dad is a total gourmet cook, used to be a professional chef. i just thought you all would appreciate this little observation of my moms and maybe share some of your own experiences of family or friends reactions to your food choices.

I shared this story on another thread, but my DH was amused one day when he told some work colleagues about how great potatoes tasted when they're fried in duck fat. One colleague said, Duck fat!? You might as well just use LARD.

So then he told them about how we render our own lard and use it almost daily. He enjoyed their looks of shock.

My family thinks I'm nuts. That's okay though...DS has never eaten a fruit loop and I'm proud of that! Seriously though, that's why I'm glad you guys are around so we can discuss the wonders of lard, etc

Dh is in the medical field. Whenever he brings anything coconut, his doctor/boss always asks him about the saturated fat. He doesn't really bother explaining to anyone there. He just comes home and shares their questions with me. If they knew I fed the kids, they'd balk! And whenever I see what his doc eats (energy bars and drinks), I say to my husband, "that's not real food!"

I don't even tell my family that our milk is raw.... maybe I'm just nonconfrontational but my sister and her fiance know, but my mom and grandparents (who we are around a lot) just think it's local grassfed milk... I just don't feel like telling them because they ALWAYS make comments about raw milk and bochelism (sp?) and freak out...

My mom just rolls her eyes when I tell people about how bad sugar, refined flour and hydrogenated oils are and how good butter, raw milk/cheese and sprouted grain bread is.

Never mind that my teeth are getting so much stronger and I have way more energy than I ever had in my life, right?

The "are you doing that just to be different?" comment sounds just like something MY mom would say, only she would never say that about my diet because I'm essentially eating exactly how she raised me to eat. Am I the only one on here who had TFy parents? (And yes, I am *extremely* thankful, beyond measure, that I was blessed with the parents I had. Have. Whatever.)

But other people... yeah. I got in an argument with a lady in line at the veggie stand last week about raw milk... should have just kept my mouth shut, but someone else there wanted to know about my cowshare arrangement. I kinda hope the anti-cow lady is there again this week though because I thought of all sorts of good comebacks. She pulled out the "we're the only animal that drinks another animal's milk" and I was trying to get my veg, talk to this other woman and watch my toddler at the same time so it wasn't until I drove away that I thought "duh, we're the only animal with opposable thumbs and the rapport with other species to actually DO it, and other animals happily drink cow/goat/sheep milk if they're offered it." Oh, all the times a clone would be useful. Sigh.

My loving daughter loves to tell folks that I make "Crap" for dinner-- she will go on to say-- its all from scratch-- not one box mix in the cupboard!! Finally one of her friends told her that-- that kinda "crap" is the best kinda "crap" you can get!! and wished that her mom would cook more for her!!-- But you know who is first in line when I annouce that it is again home made pizza day!! Dough, sauce ( I will be soon working up the courage to make mozzarella cheese too!) all home made and I grow the maters myself!! all organic-- She also gave me grief over the making yogurt at home too-- but sat here the other day added fresh jam to a cup of it and scarfed it down!! I think that it may just be a " I'm embaressed by my MOM" thing-- but now that she is a MOM ( I have been a new gramma for 7 weeks now and has to think of someone other than herself-- The tide may be turning in my favor.
I have also become the focal point of the family reunion on helping other family members start gardens-- I guess that the cost of fuel/ and food going up so much has had some good sides-- always a silver lining somewhere!

This is a funny thread. My mom thinks I'm nuts, too, but from the opposite direction as most of you all. I was raised mostly raw vegan and so my mom has little comments to make here and there. She doesn't comment much, but sometimes it slips out. Mostly it's what shes does that's irritating. She'll bring apples and such and get out my champion juicer and make fruit juice for the kids (which is a big no-no in our house because of dd's teeth). Then she'll go on and on about how healthy they're going to be because of it. LOL. You should have seen the look on her face when I popped a raw egg yolk in my smoothie! She was hounding that thing until it was gone "Sarah, that has a raw egg in it, it shouldn't sit out in the room this long, should it?" And so on. lol.

The crazy thing - she never, ever, ever eats animal products (she'd rather eat a white bread roll than touch any sort of milk products), but yet she has fairly high cholesterol (according to her doctor, who doesn't believe that she doesn't eat animal products - if only he knew, then maybe he'd suspect something was amiss with his dearly held theory). I keep emailing her articles about the cholesterol myths...but life-long habits and beliefs die hard.

Oh well, I tried...

Cats seem to LOVE milk, in my experience. They can only get it from humans, but still, when it's available, they eat it, right?

I've also read that if big cats take down a lactating animal, the first thing they eat is the udder, because it's full of milk.

My mom dumped an entire gallon of raw goat milk down the drain once. The reason? "It had lumpy stuff on the top and it smelled funny" She didn't know it was goat milk....I just about died....that stuff is so expensive and we so rarely got the chance to have it. Sigh!

I have another take on this

I told my parents all about TF, WAPF, NT 6 years ago and gave my mom a copy of Nourishing Traditions, but nothing came of it. They were doing organic and as unprocessed as they believed was healthy, but no raw milk, lite on animal fats, no fermented, lots of boxed cereals, crackers, etc.

So about 2 years later (the whole time we are doing TF, minus the milk being raw), my Mom, through Mercola I think, gets into WAPF, starts eating animal fats and espousing the virtues of raw dairy and grass-fed, etc. I smirk at how she thinks she "discovered" this on her own.

Then about a year later, I was in her pantry and said, "Hey mom, you have 2 copies of Nourishing Traditions". She says "Yeah, I bought one last year (i.e. when she "discovered" TF) and then I found the other one when we moved, no idea where that came from" :

Moral of the story: the youngest daughter can't possibly know what she is talking about, ignore her, then when you "discover" what she's been telling you all along, still don't believe she could have found it herself.

Hmmm...

Oh well, its all worth it to be able to go over for dinner and have locally raised grass-fed roasts and raw butter.

I guess I'd better get my copy of NT back from my mom while I can! LOL!

My dad would love to eat local, free range eggs everyday, but he says it's just not healthy! He used to back when I was a kid and we had chickens.

But a Little Debbie honey bun everyday is essential!
No, I'm not kidding!

The other day my MIL rattled off some kind of silly rebuttle like "well the Bible says not to eat animal fat" and I was just sort of stunned... I'm all "huh?!" it was so silly I just sort of chewed on it and told her I couldn't possibly believe that it wasn't a good thing.

People will believe the strangest things!

where in the bible does it say not to eat animal fat??? the bible is full of references to meat eating and all meat contains some fat... i don't get it. also having read "the makers diet" the author cites the bible constantly but is not anti-animal fat.

Yeah I have no idea where she pulled that from:
