charlottesville, VA?

Thread Starter
Rumor has it that we'll be moving there sometimes soon. I know very little about the area. What are the good schools, areas, etc. I would rather not live IN the city.
Also, if all goes well, I will be pregnant when we move. Any suggestions for natural birthing options? Midwives, birthing centers? maybe richmond?
What about Pedi's that let you do your own thing with vaxing?
I don't like finding all new dr.s et al. Thanks for the opinions!

Unless you're wanting to farm or have land, I would recommend living in the city. If you live in one of the subdivisions outside of town, you'll find yourself needing to drive everywhere. Gas is more expensive here than in other parts of Virginia, along with everything else.

What kinds of amenities do you need and want? Do you want to be within walking distance of playgrounds? Do you need local trails (paved or not)? Do you want to garden a little or grow most of your food? What kind of proximity do you need to park&rec programs, libraries, or supermarkets? Do you bike a lot? Walk? Prefer to drive?

I live in town. I have a small garden. I can walk many places, but there are no grocery stores within safe walking distance. We try to avoid driving unless it's necessary. The bus lines are decent, though not super impressive if you've lived somewhere with really good public transit.

www.birthmattersva.org is the best resource for finding a midwife. Last I checked there were two midwifery practices that do homebirths (two midwives in each practice). There is one midwife who works with a Dr. and attends births at one of the local hospitals.

I agree with the recommendation to live in town unless you are wanting land or to farm.

There are 6 elementary schools in the city: Jackson-Via, Johnson, Clark, Venable, Burley-Moran, and Greenbriar. If I could choose I would opt for Venable or Greenbriar personally. I recently heard that Johnson had the best test scores last year (I'm not sure I believe it, though).

New to C-ville

Though I'm going on a year living just outside of charlottesville, I still consider myself new to the area (moved from Vermont). Especially now that I get to know my way around as a new mom!
I am searching for a community of other mums too and have started looking for a yoga class suitable for early pregnancy.. any suggestions?
My husband and are starting a small farm/homestead and I'm interested in finding like minded individuals... hopefully some who have or are having babes.
I know y'all are out there, but via what forum?

I live out in Louisa. I'm 8 months pg and my friend who's 4 months and I are both using Mountain View Midwifery for our midwives. Planning a hb (waterbirth) out here. I can't yet report on how they are during labor/birth but the level of prenatal care so far has been excellent.

Check "Body Mind & spirit" for prenatal yoga (by Integral Yoga on Preston Ave.)

Peds: Dr. Greg Gelburd (at Downtown Family Healthcare) and Dr. Bruce Campbell (I think that's his name?) out in Free Union are two that I know of who are fine with alternate vax options.

Martha Jeff. hospital OB unit is basically a birthing center. I haven't used it, but most of my friends have and loved the experience. There is one midwife I know of who delivers there -- Donna Vinal, who works with Dr. Wolanski. I've heard that it is very hard to get in with her, though - friends who found out VERY early that they were pregnant (like 3 weeks!) called and she said that she was already booked!! But worth a shot.

Where do yo live now? The "city" of Charlottesville is not really a city in my opinion. The downtown and surrounding areas are referred to the city because it's a different municipality than the surrounding county of Albemarle. The county schools are a bit better than the city schools, but most of the"City of Charlottesville" is very much a suburban setting that is the same as the surrounding county.

The downtown area is more city-like and just as the other poster said, it's very walkable and there are many stores- even food stores- around but not a grocery store. There used to be one by the downtown mall years back, but it's gone. I wish someone would put in another one, I might consider moving back!

This is so true. I live in the city of Charlottesville (near the Locust ave exit off 250) and when we were apartment hunting we stood out the front yard and all we could hear were birds chirping.

It was so funny because I'm from NYC so my definition of "city" is decidedly more noisy/smelly/dirty.

FYI in a few minutes I'm starting a "Charlottesville November Events" thread for a few free events coming up this month that mothering moms might like.

Hello!

I live south of Charlottesville. I am having a hard time finding a VBA2C-friendly provider in the area. Do you have any suggestions?

I would second the recommendation for Dr. Gelburd. My son sees him, and he's great!

I think your best bet would be Dr. Wolansky- best wishes.

That's actually who I'm seeing now. I really like him, but he said no flat out to a VBA2C.

ami, What was his reasoning? Was it specific to your history or was it a generalization of all VBA2Cs?

It was a resounding no to VBA2Cs in general. He said the risk of rupture is too high. I have been wondering if that is MJH's position, as well.

Hi! I am north of cville, and it sounds like we are on the same page...as soon as our house sells we will be moving to a small farm in nellysford to get things growing! Where are you in relation to town?

I don't know how to say this without sounding like I am trying to speak badly about someone so I will just say it. Dr.Gelburd is a conventional pediatrician who has a reputation for being "alternative", but he is not. I have personal experience with him that is contrary and over the years of knowing him, I have known people to have similar experiences. I would caution about going with expectations that he is homebirth friendly, he is not at all, respectful of herbal or alternative medicines, or that he is non-vax friendly, he is not.

I went to him with a certain expectation (my fault) based on his reputation for being alternative, and was very very disappointed with the experience.

He is great with children though, so if you are looking for a regular old pediatrician, he is perfect.

My intention is to clear up the misrepresentation about him, not slander his him, I have great respect for his practice and his place in the community.

I don't know any homebirth-nonvax-alternative-medicine-friendly pediatricians... anyone?

My experience with Dr. Gelburd is that he seemed completely conventional until I told him we were interested in alternative treatments and homeopathy. Now he never suggests mainstream meds to me without giving me homeopathic options first. He has made homeopathic treatments for me in the office. He doesn't seem happy about my decision to not vax but has never pushed the issue and I know it is written in my chart.

Our experience with Dr. Gelburd is very similar to what Kabes described. He has offered homeopathic options on several occasions, and he has seemed accepting of our decision to delay/selectively vax. Whatever his personal opinions may be, he was willing to engage in conversation about the issue without making us feel like we were terrible parents. It certainly was a contrast to our previous pediatrician who put a lot of pressure on us to vax on schedule.

I'm sorry that your experience was disappointing, wrenmoon.

Wonderful!
We are just 12 minutes south of charlottesville in North Garden. We are looking to grow grains in the coming years and get our homestead going. well when you move down here we'll be country neighbors- lets stay in touch.
do you have kids already? what are you looking to do in the area?

Yup, I have two on the ground and one on the way in June. Daughter-1 Son-3
When are you due?
I know LOTS of crunchy earth mamas out that way, which is why we are moving there, so that going to have tea with my girlfriends in the morning is not an all day affair. ( I live an hour away right now, add two kids to that and it takes 9 hours to go anywhere)

The farm where we are moving has been primarily horses, but we want to do the whole enchilada- horses, a cow, sheep, chickens, orchard, ginormous gardens, you know, general hippie permaculture paradise... Grains for sure. That is the five year plan at least.

We are having an open house this weekend. Hopefully this move will be happening soon!:
