Has anyone heard of Dr. Ryland from the Pediatric Holistic Health Center? His practice and theory on his website looks good, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with him?

My husband really wanted to take our son to Dr. Rydland, but I was concerned about using a physician who doesn't accept health insurance. If you do see him, I would love to hear how it goes.

Dr. Rydland is amazing and has done incredible work for several of my friend's children. Unfortunately he is very expensive and as *ami* said does not accept health insurance.

I've heard great things about Dr. Ogan. He's got a great reputation for listening to parents. He does housecalls, and I know he works with parents to do at least an alternative vax schedule.

I would caution about going with expectations that he is homebirth friendly, he is not at all, respectful of herbal or alternative medicines, or that he is non-vax friendly, he is not.

I went to him with a certain expectation (my fault) based on his reputation for being alternative, and was very very disappointed with the experience.

He is great with children though, so if you are looking for a regular old pediatrician, he is perfect.

My intention is to clear up the misrepresentation about him, not slander his him, I have great respect for his practice and his place in the community.

I don't know any homebirth-nonvax-alternative-medicine-friendly pediatricians... anyone?
this is good to know. i bring my 4 mth dd to the downtown health clinic but we've seen jackie the ped-np. she's very nice and so far has suggested natural remedies and so far she seems okay with my preference towards non-vaxing, she said "we can talk about it..." we haven't seen dr gelburd even though his name is on our insurance cards, etc.

That's interesting! I love and adore Jackie (and she knows it) but I find her to be more mainstream that Dr. Gelburd.

I took my son to him a few years ago for a well baby visit and conversation about vaccines when he first set up in town, and he was nice enough. We ended up having to pay out of pocket for the visit which was REALLY expensive, so we haven't been back because he decided to not join our insurance group. So I don't have any feedback about his treatment, other than that first meeting.

I have also heard really great things about Dr.Ogan. That is who most of my mama friends use as a ped.

VBA2C in Charlottesville

I have confirmed with Mountainview Midwifery that they would consider moms trying for a VBAC after 2 cesarean births. I had my third child with these women (not a VBAC) and can affirm that their care is second to none. Check them and their blog out. Prepare to be awestruck if/when you meet them.

Midwife Brynne Potter won a statewide award this past summer and gave this great speech:

Yeaa Mountain View Mama's-
Anyone here worked with them through out pregnancy and birth? I am 4 mo. along and have had a good experience with them thus far. When I first learned I was preggs I went to an OB just to see if they could offer anything else that midwives wouldn't/couldn't...
But it just confirmed what I instinctively knew (after having my ear talked off and given endorsements for various brands of baby formula)- It is empowering and exciting to work with midwives interested in keeping the woman educated and in charge. Too bad this is not the norm...
Thanks for the link to Brynn's speech. Both Brynn and Deren seem intent on keeping the "politics" out of our sessions together, but I know midwives confront many issues of a status quo that does not necessarily work for the woman.

Thank you for the information.

that is funny! i didn't go to our appt anyway. dd is healthy and i'm still doing research on vaxing---my semi-informed position as of now is: no way in hell! so i just didn't and don't feel like discussing it with Jackie or any mainstreamish person right now. whatever the case she is very sweet and gentle with our LO.

BTW we randomly passed by Dr Ryland's office today cause our friend lives near by and i ducked in the consignment shop. its nice to know there's a holistic ped in town even if we can't afford his services.

I have heard Dr. Rydland speak, and he has a lot of his own herbal medicines that he markets at the local health food stores. A friend of mine uses him and likes him a lot. He doesn't take insurance, though. He seemed very knowledgable. I think I heard him talk about vaccines at the Holistic Moms meeting last year...can't remember exactly.

Dr. Gelburd told me that 2/3 of his patients are on selective/delayed/no vax schedules and is totally fine with that. I've never felt pressured in the least. When I asked him what he recommended, he did recommend DTaP because of the pertussis risk around here, but he said we could wait on most everything else and not even do some of them at all. He's also recommended homeopathy and given me some preparations right there in the office. He will also be a "regular" ped. if that's what people want.
