What fabric for making winter footie pajamas?

I'm so creeped out by the fire retardant chemicals they use in kid's pajamas! To make pajamas with feet for a 3 year old, what fabric would you use? It's fairly cold where we are (Pacific Northwest) so cotton would be too thin. And fleece doesn't seem very eco-friendly. Would wool be too warm? Is there some kind of wool blend that would be better for pajamas? Any leads on where to buy? Thanks!

no leads to buy since i sew with "recycled and used" materials.

i sew pjs with flannel for my 2 years old but not footed. but i am curious why footed?

wool will be very warm, even me living in the arctic i wont put the kids in wool for bedtime. you can probably try wool blend, but dont know where to get them, maybe try googling it?..i personally dont like fleece for pjs but will use it for jackets and coats.

Actually, many fleeces are now made out of recycled pop bottles. Maybe you could seek out some of that fleece!

Otherwise, silk jersey and wool jersey are supposed to be warm and breatheable. Depending on how "hot" a sleeper your child is, it may or may not be a good choice. I feel that way about wool, too, though. I tend to put my hot sleepers in cotton jersey, footed if I can swing it. That way, they are covered if they kick off the covers, and are not sweating themselves into oblivion if they DON'T kick off the covers.

Funny, I do most of my sewing with recycled stuff too! (I have a shop on Etsy that's all recycled stuff!)

When making the pjs, do you just recycle flannel blankets? I hadn't thought of doing something like that, so maybe I'll give it a try!

Oh, and my DD needs feet on the pjs because it keeps her warmer and I don't have to wonder if she still has her socks on.

Just a thought, but for the feet, could you find a pair of socks and sew them to the bottoms of the legs?
