Alternatives to shaving cream for men?

I'm sure "plain old soap" is a possibility, but I wonder if there are more creamy things I can make.

I'm interested from a frugal and green perspective to see if the commercial shaving cream DH uses can be replaced.

If it were me, I'd try soap. But I'm almost certain DH isn't gonna go for that suggestion. DH *IS* interested in being green, and has made a number of adjustments (and some he made and then embraced after initial resistance) but I think he's going to want to see CREAM of some sort if he's going to switch. Maybe after an initial adjustment to homemade cream of some sorts he might be willing to try even simpler things, but he'll need to start somewhere in his current comfort zone.

Ideas?

Let's see... Frugal and green alternatives to commercial shaving cream..

1) no shaving- embrace your natural furriness
2) soap
3) conditioner (the kind meant for hair)
4) shaving cream made by a "green company" that's free of the worst additives and comes in a recylable container. This is the least frugal option, but probably the easiest step for your DH to take if he's used to commercial products.

Hubby uses soap with an old fashioned shaving brush and mug. By whipping the soap, he makes a lather that works as well as shaving cream. If you do this, have a spot to place the mug and brush to dry otherwise the brushes will break down quickly.

I switched my DH almost a year ago, and at this point I don't think he'd ever go back. I buy shaving soap on etsy, it's specially formulated with a type of clay to make the razor glide smoothly over the skin. He rarely nicks himself now. A little dish and a shaving brush completed the ensemble. The soap leaves his skin so soft and smooth, I love it.

My DH uses the old fashioned mug with the little brush. I know he has tried several different types of soaps and shaving stuff that he can lather up in his mug. There are a lot of frugal and organic alternatives to shaving cream that can be used with the brush and mug. My DH has even gone to using the old fashioned double edged razor because he can get a ten pack of those blades for 1.59 and the razor blades decompose/rust over time and do not leave as much trash as the disposables or even the electrics.

My DH is a bit of a geek and did his own research. He he has found tons of shaving advice and alternatives on these web sites:

This was EXACTLY what I was looking for, thanks! A little embarassed since it's so obvious, but there ya go. I mentioned it to DH and I was kind of surprised, he was "sold" right away. All ready to get a brush and shaving soap. I mentioned the straight edge razors, though, and he was like uh-uh, I don't want to cut my throat. LOL

Aloe Gel?

Shaving always makes my DH's face very dry, so I've been wondering about his using Aloe gel instead of shaving soap. It works a treat on my legs, but so far he isn't willing to try it on his face (he's a "set in his ways" type of guy, unless I can PROVE that another way is better!)

Has anyone ever tried that? Would they be willing to, so I can tell my DH how it works? I was thinking of "Fruit of the Earth" brand aloe gel, which has no additives or glycerin or anything like that in it.
