I have sympathy for the dad's situation - our society is not set up to support parents, and it sounds like they had a really rough time of it these past couple years. But what makes me sad is that I honestly think there are always other options than dropping your kids off at a hospital and leaving. There must be gentler ways to get your kids into the care of the state if that is what you've determined needs to happen.
Previous posters have suggested their relief that he didn't kill them all. I think there's plenty of room to talk about other ways to handle the situation than murder.
