We are Final!!!! Question about changing Socials..

We finalized our adoption on Sept 12th! WOOHOO!!!:
We just got the ammended birth certificate in today and I have plans to go tomorrow to get the new social done. But my question is - do I need to bring the certified copy of the Adoption Decree with the birth certificate or can I bring a copy of the decree?
I ask because I know that since the records are offically sealed - that if I lose the certified copy I would have to go before the judge to request another one. BIG LONG PROCESS. I would rather leave it in the safe and take a copy if possible!

I don't think you need to have the adoption decree. Just the original (new) birth certificate. Remember you don't want to change the number. You are applying for a new number. The old child doesn't exist so don't check the box that asks if the child ever had a number in his/her name.

I'd bring the copy of the decree, if you want, but you really only need the birth certificate.

That is correct - you have to have the new birth certificate with you. I just went and they looked at the decree and the certificate. Although I didn't take the certified decree just the copy of it!

I'm glad it was an easy process for you. I've heard horror stories about misinformation given and people having had to go back multiple times.

I'm still waiting for my son's birth certificate. When it gets here, I'll make the appointment and go. I need to do it soon since we're heading into tax season.
