Ugh, Allergic to Olive Oil!

I've had my suspicions for a little while now so I fried up some potatoes in olive oil yesterday for dd (potatoes had already been tested and are OK) and sure enough today her little butt is red and she was screaming all last night.

Who the heck is allergic to olive oil? Or olives I suppose. Why does she react to such weird things?

She didn't have any obvious reactions when it was used in baked goods or things like pancakes but of course now I'm going to take it out of our diets.

What's another oil I should replace it with? I've also used canola and vegetable (soy) oil in things and she didn't react but again that was in things that were baked...

Her list of known food allergies/intolerances is in my siggy; I know that will be the first question

Weird Rachel. We're off of almost the same list of foods. Actually, we're off all of your foods plus a few more. We lost olive oil a few months ago, to be followed by safflower oil, grapeseed oil, flax and hemp. We do okay with sunflower oil and walnut oil and organic canola and coconut. I think the reason we lost olive oil was because I wasn't rotating oils. I'd used olive oil for EVERYTHING forEVER. I don't miss it now though... Good luck!

That stinks. We use organic canola and palm shortening (in addition to olive).

Maybe try grapeseed oil. My MIL just started cooking with it and loves it. We use that and olive oil. I'm allergic to sunflower. Weird things to be allergic to!

Both actually. She doesn't appear to react to it through my diet though or in baked things. Maybe just because it's such a small amount? She's prob reacting but just not noticeably I bet. I actually don't fry things very often anymore...I did back in the days of the TED but I can eat a decent variety these days and don't feel the need to fry absolutely everything lol.

And it is NOT beautiful here in D.C! I'm FREEZING : I know that sounds insane but we just came from Tucson where we'd lived for almost 6 years...this 65-70 degree weather in D.C. is January winter to us lol. The high temp in Tuscon today is supposed to be 93. I am really enjoying all the green though. My dh and I are totally overwhelmed by all the trees and green grass and my kids are freaked out by the grass since they've never seen nice soft grass before haha. Anyways we found a place in Springfield, what area are you in? If you know of any plagroups or want to get together sometime send me a PM...I know absolutely no one here.

How funny!! I'm from ASU, and I hate the heat which is why I love it here now : I'm about 30-40 minutes from u but we can still totally meet up I'll PM u later. So is she allergic to everything in the olive family or just olives? and how did u figure out avocados?

You got me curious and I looked up the olive family and the only thing in it is olives and olive oil. I figured out avocados because it was the first food I ever gave her and she threw it all up. I thought she was prob just too young for solids (she was 6.5 mos). But when I tried them again months later she threw them up again and broke out in excema. I seem to be able to eat avocados though too without her reacting. It seems only the "big" things get into my breast milk: the dairy, corn, eggs, and wheat.

Are you sure potatoes are okay? Because they are highly allergenic (I'd rather you lost potatoes and kept the olive oil!!).

My DS reacted only to milk through my breastmilk, and reacted horribly to soy when he ingested it himself. My DD didn't react to anything in my breastmilk. Though once she started solids, she reacted to everything. So you just never know.

Yeah I'm sure. She eats potatoes often but usually they are boiled or baked. Once several months ago I fried them and she reacted but she had also tried something else so we weren't sure and I didn't try them again until just the other day. Oh well.
