Ulcerative Colitis

I'm not really sure where else to post this, so if it needs to be moved I understand!

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? My dh has it, and no matter what the drs do, we can't seem to control it with medication. They've tested him for celiac, and since his bloodwork didn't show it, he doesn't believe that it could be a food intolerance......anyway, I've got him convinced that we need to try some alternatives since he's bleeding daily and has been since may of 07 ()

of course it's taking a toll on him, and he's recently started to lose weight again.....he's nearly 5'10" and i'd be willing to bet he weighs about 135lbs. i guess i'm just looking for any advice or experience with diet changes and/or alternative therapies that have worked for anyone. it just kills me to see him so sick and weak all the time, and there's nothing i can do for him.

Thanks!

I would definitely recommend doing an elimination diet to see if it helps with his symptoms (check out my blog for some info on that.) I would get rid of the top 8, plus gluten, corn, nightshade veggies, caffeine, and citrus to start with.

You might also check out these books, which deal a lot with digestive disorders and how to heal them:

- Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski
- Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall (and here's the website about it too)

There is a definite relationship between food allergies/intolerances and digestive diseases. I think you've come to the right place!

Does he not believe it could be a gluten intolerance or ANY food intolerance? A celiac panel isn't even a perfect instrument as far as identifying gluten intolerance. I agree with CS. Will be take supplements? Probiotics, CLO, and glutamine would probably be very helpful. Check out the sticky in resources about that, also the Healing the Gut sticky in Health and Healing.

Ulcerative colitis

I would do everything you can to get him to try the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Just tell him to try it for you, for 3 months, and if there's no change, you won't bug him about it. There are many many poeple who have been healed from UC and other forms of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) with that diet. Please read the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle.
