Ok Nancy Drews... I need some brainstorming here.
I recently intro'd Vitamin C back into my diet (because I've been fighting a nasty cold and feeling crappy), and I think DD is reacting to it. We've also intro'd a few other things in the past 2 weeks though, so there is a slight chance that it's something else. But I'm pretty sure it's the Vitamin C. (Background- I was originally, months ago, taking a 'hypo-allergenic' ascorbic acid- straight, no fillers- that DD reacted to. So I switched to the TwinLabs Allergy-C, and wasn't sure if she was still reacting, so stopped.)
9/22 - took 2 TwinLabs Allergy-C caps (from sago palm, not corn) around lunchtime.... DD is madly scratching her face a few hours later, and is VERY gassy the whole day. (this is also day 4 of our turkey trial, which seemed to pass.)
9/23 - took 2 caps with breakfast... DD has tantrums that evening. (this is also day 1 of our local, pastured chicken trial- which also seemed to pass.... I know, I'm doing too many things at once.)
9/24 - no caps during the day... her face is slightly flared that morning and very itchy, but by the evening it's looking much better.
took 2 caps of the C that evening, and dumped it out of the gelcap (in case it's the gelatin capsule that's bothering her)....
9/25 - again, face slightly flared in the am.... then got very dry, skin peeling on chin, but then almost completely cleared by evening.
Fast forward to last night... again, 2 caps (without the capsule) in the evening after dinner (probably around 8:00). DD goes to bed around 10:30, wakes up at 11:00 screaming. Screams for about an hour, then finally passes out. The whole time that she's up, she keeps wanting to eat- latching on for a minute, then letting go.
So here's where I'm confused- if it IS the Vitamin C, her symptoms haven't been very consistent since I started it... either in timing, or the symptoms themselves.
Is it possible to be allergic to Vitamin C (not what it's derived from, just the C itself)? Or is it possible that my gut is just so full of holes, that the C is going straight through, giving DD a big dose of C and hurting her tummy? I've read that your body will limit the amount of C that passes through into BM, but does that change with a leaky gut?? I almost (and should have!) tasted my BM last night to see if it tasted acidic or something since she kept wanting to eat and then popping off... but I've never tasted it, so I wouldn't have anything to compare to.
Sorry for the novel....
