Midwives, birth center, natural birth in Dover, NH area?

Hi, I'm looking for a recommendation for a friend in the Dover, NH area. Probably not looking for a homebirth midwife, and according to birthcenters.org, there don't seem to be any centers that are less than an hour from my friend, which is probably too far. However, if there are any great, very pro-natural-birth midwives and/or OBs who practice in hospitals, or birth centers not listed on that site, I'd appreciate suggestions to pass on to her. Thanks in advance, and PMs are okay too!

There is a beautiful birth center in Stratham, about 20-25 minutes from Dover. Valerie Jacques, the midwife/owner, would probably be a great match for your friend. Here's the link: www.coastalfamilybirthretreat.com

Just wanted to give a big thumbs up for Valerie Jacques :

In addition to the birth center (I'm in Dover and it takes ~20 min to get there) there are several hb midwives, and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has a very good reputation for births. There is also a doula network for the seacoast area.

You can PM me for more info or to have your friend email me.

Oh, wow, thanks so much! CFBR looks like it would be perfect for my friend. I'm so glad I asked, rather than just assuming there wasn't anything since it wasn't listed on the birthcenters.org site. 20 minutes doesn't sound bad for a drive. I'll definitely pass that along to my friend, as well as the recommendation for Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

I'll second Wentworth Douglass. I gave birth to my DS there and will be giving birth to this babe there any day now. I used the OBs/midwives at Garrison Women's and they're great. Some are more interventiony than others but I'm pretty happy with them. They've been very good about listening to me and following what I want in regards to birth and aren't pushy at all.

Hm, I gave birth at Wentworth-Douglass. Also had Garrison and gave birth with one of their midwifes. I personally would not repeat that. I loved most of the nurses their, their Lactation Consultants are OUTSTANDING, PATIENT and just lovely. Karla, that woman saved my sanity and was just human and supportive!

On the other, the midwife I gave birth with did not even see me for my 6 week checkup, I was too upset. Everone seems to have different experiences but I was not impressed with Garrison "handling" my birth. It took me a while to even write it down, but there it is.

I know some people will not agree with me-but I want to be honest. I would return BECAUSE of the nurses (their Level II Unit Nurses are wonderful, the Pediatricians on the other hand are awful, honestly) and the LCs-Garrison will not see me again.

I think the staff at Wentworth is doing their best within their "policies" and you will find some some outstanding nurses and LCs.

I guess it all depends on who you get. Do you mind if I ask which midwife it was?

My DD's birth was horrible and she was born at Portsmouth hospital. Every thing about it from start to finish was awful. My experience with WDH was completely different.

I did meet one mw there that severely rubbed me the wrong way when I was pregnant with my third... she was very condescending and pushy. However, I don't think that my experience is necessarily indicative of Garrison as a whole, or even that mw. (I was having a UP/UC, went in for bleeding at 20 weeks, everything was fine, and I ended up refusing the RhoGam shot. She seriously thought my baby was going to die. So I cut her some slack, since she was really afraid.)

But could be she is in general just always condescending and pushy, in which case I imagine it wouldn't be a good birth experience with her.

InExile, sorry about your disappointment with your birth, I couldn't read your thread on it since it wouldnt' let me access it - but I wanted to offer a

I used Dover Women's Health and had 2 fantastic experiences at WDH. The md/mw's at DWH are into hypnobirthing, waterbirths, and all that other good crunchy stuff people talk about here. I found the nurses very helpful, not pushy and respectful of my wishes. Dover Peds are the pediatricians with hospital priviledges and well, they have a job to do. You can refuse any treatment they suggest, just know what you're doing and have thoroughly researched the topic so you don't sound like a flake (not that you or your friend are of course).
