~October No Spend Challenge~ The economy declines, MDC familes SAVE!!!!!! - Page 5

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of October.

I am a SAHM to an 18-mo. DD. DH is in an unstable job situation. We owe $4000 for the rest of a landscaping payment and intend to pay it off this month. Apart from that, the mortgage is our only debt. We very much need to start hoarding nuts for winter, as it were--that is, saving up to tough out (what politicians will not allow us to call) the Recession.

2. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?

* $120.00/wk on groceries. Eat in. Pack snacks for errands. Cook, cook, cook!! Veganize the diet a little (we're an ovo-lacto veg family, and cheese is $$$$!).

* No touching the heat dial until it's 64F. (Don't laugh. I'm a wuss! )

* Thursday is a no-drive, stay-at-home day, (it's hard to avoid the car where I live ).

* Finish one DIY project that I've been tempted to hand over to a contractor.

3. Be specific! What are your goals? How many no spend days is right for you? Do you have a savings goal? Debt repayment goal?

* PAY OURSELVES FIRST. 20% of each of DH's paychecks goes to savings.

* Pay the 4K and recoup savings.

* 5/7 no spend days per week, with 7/7 naturally being the goal.

KEY:

= Necessary spending
: = Unnecessary spending
: = No-drive day

1 Oct: : Went $5.00 over on grocery limit. Spent $150.00 to have heating system serviced.
2 Oct: :
3rd $25.00 at Fred Meyer for dessert auction ingredients, $40.00 in bulk dog food, $9.00 to buy schtuff to wrap and display the desserts. Expensive but necessary spending today. :

I went out and bought a sleep sac new today, because I also needed some baby proofing things instead of looking at gw/vv as I should have. I guess I was feeling a little sick of second hand because I had bought one recently that had a bad zipper and had to be thrown out. Me and also spent money on groceries, which is fine - 63.68 all together which also includes dish soap (lots) and tp.

01.
02. $52.91 on a sleep sac and baby proofing supplies

63.68/400: Groceries
0/50: Gifts
0/150: Gas

yes!!!

oct 1: $56 but necessities
oct 2: $7, which consisted of a cup of coffee, lunch, and bananas, yogurt, and pita chips as a teeny little grocery shop. i should have a $50 gift card to my work coming soon from volunteering to do inventory...getting to work at 4am is NOTHING if you'll give me $50 towards good food! big grocery shop with that $50, and that's not even out of my own pocket! so far, this month is feeling great. plus, just found out i'm getting nearly a $300 bonus mid-month as well. hooray!!!

now...to fight the temptation to go get starbucks. dd woke up at 7, but it was still dark out and 7am felt like 5am and i also woke up with my period...come on mamas, i neeeeeeeed a treat.

Hey guys, would this be easier if we make a new thread for each day?
I would commit to doing it every morning if it makes everyones life easier?

I am doing amazingly well this week.

October 1 - :
October 2 - :
October 3 - :

I have not spent a dime and have not used the car for anything this week.
Tonight might be a challenge , being that it is date night. I am not sure if I should just bring it down to only spending a few bucks on food to cook at home, or just cook food from what we have here. I am not sure.

my key:
- no spend
: - no drive
: - weekend without spending
- spent unbudgeted money

It would not be easier for me because I use yesterday's post to update today's post...so I'd have to jump between both threads just to update.

But if it would be easier for you, by all means feel free to do it that way. We could keep this one long thread for the people like me who need all the posts together and then one thread that changes each day for the people like you who need a fresh start each day.

Whatever works best for you and helps you spend less money -- do it!

Okay. This made me laugh. Because definitely this happens to ALL of us!

Progress Not Perfection. You are still doing great. I wouldn't count that expense against yourself because you have to feed your kids and there was no way you could have prepared for that.

Think of your long term goals.

Would celebrating his first birthday (which he is not going to remember anyway) be more important than...say...putting that money in a CD so he can have it when he goes to college?

I don't know what your long term goals are (and I'm not saying you SHOULDN'T celebrate today -- go ahead if that will make you happy!) but I'm just throwing that out there.

You are trying to save money for SOMETHING or you wouldn't be on this thread.

Keep that something at the forefront of your thoughts.
