Is there a pregnant vegans thread? If not, let's start one - Page 5

Just wondering if there are any other vegan/strict vegetarian parents in the Salt Lake city, utah area who have kids around the my sons age. (2.5)

It seems like most of our vegan friends have moved away, and the rest don't have children. And as my Little guy gets older, he is noticing more the difference between he and the omni friends he has.
I want him to be around other children who have the same food choices as he, so he doesn't feel left out.

It would also be great to get a network of veg parents in the Salt Lake area to do Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter parties with.

Anyone? Anyone?

Hi! I am in SLC! My DS is 18 months, and I know of a couple other vegan families too

Hahaha! oops. I didn't see this reply before I replied to you other one.

Do you and your other veg friends get together to do Holiday stuff?

I've often wondered how many vegan families do this. Our families still expect to see us on holidays, but the thought of not having to deal with the food issues surrounding it is so refreshing.

We do a Thanksgiving with friends who are on the crunchy side (but not vegan). We do Halloween with my stepdaughter's mom and sister (who are vegan) and it is nice to not have to do any explaining. Other holidays, like Christmas Eve, we are doing here so we can control the menu.

For the 3-4 months I craved a lot of salad and fresh fruits and veggies, but now it's all carbs and sweets.. I've been really tired and nauseous too (still!) so haven't had much energy to cook, but when I do I try to make big portions of meals with lots of veggies and protein- tofu spinach lasagne, tofu sloppy joes, fajitas, etc. and then just freeze a bunch.. but I honestly feel like all I have eaten in the past month is bagels and soy ice cream, haha.

Anyways, look forward to getting to know you all!

Much Love,
MG
Hahaha...you sound just like me! Lots of bagels and tofutti lately....it has been the only thing I have been craving....I have to force myself to cook good food...it just isn't something I am in the mood to do very much right now....

We have a vegetarian/vegan thanksgiving and christmas with our family. We have a lot of veg family members.. those that do eat meat get a little turkey, premake it, and keep it off the dinner table - besides whats on their plates.

It's halloween that I have no idea what to do. I would love to have a vegan halloween party for the kids (and adults), but I don't currently have the space to throw one.

I am craving sweets like crazy--and don't even tell me that it's a protein craving! I've been eating so much protein that my kidneys are probably waving white flags right now.

Anyway, I'm trying to delay the inevitable holiday cookie making and making my Nona's panettone recipe instead. Maybe that will keep me out of the cookies for a while.

Raw vegans Are there any cookbooks that have some nice holiday recipes in them? What do you recommend for just everyday simple recipes? I had some raw carrot "cake" for dessert this weekend and I figured that if it's a raw treat, it's probably healthy and takes care of my out-of-control sweet tooth at the same time.

What is everyone (who celebrates it) making for Thanksgiving? I'm definitely making mock chicken florentine loaf from one of the PETA cookbooks ("Please Don't Eat the Animals"), some mashed potatoes, gravy, something with beets (seriously craving them), and maybe a pumpkin pie.

I am making vegan green bean casserole, mashed potatoes/gravy, and a frozen vegan pumpkin pie. SIL is doing the tofurkey, MIL a salad, my mom is making homemade rolls, someone is doing stuffing (maybe us, I dunno). That's all I know so far. I usually go all out for thanksgiving and make almost everything, but I am limiting it to 3 things this year.

For Xmas we always have an Italian dish- Lasagna usually.. last year I made vegan mannicotti (sp?).

We usually do a Vegan Thanksgiving A day or two before thanksgiving, Then do the family one the next day.
But we have recently had like 2 vegan families move away for Jobs and My hubby had a sort of a falling out with my other vegan friend. Its complicated.

i have other vegan friends, but we don't really have the same friends in common, so I dont want to have them do 3 thanksgivings!!

This year, we are just going to Do our own thanksgiving, then go to the family's and maybe take a pie.

My family is somewhat accomodating for our family, But mostly not, and I don't really expect too much. Im one of 8 kids and on the tail end, so....

Usually at family dinners, they have fruit or veggies and will set a bowl of salad to the side with out the cheese on it....
"Gee, thanks!" hahaha
Theres never enough room to make my stuff there.

I think that from now on, I will just eat at home first and come for dessert and bring my own.

just rambling... sorry lol!

I have been a vegetarian for 9 months. I am having a huge arby's roast beef sandwich craving. Is there a good subsitute?

For our thanksgiving at home (which will happen the weekend after), I am doing a roasted pumpkin stuffed with veggie and seitan stew, celeriac mashed potatoes, cornbread-sourdough stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry-dried cherry tart, pumpkin pie with a chocolate cookie crumb/gingersnap crust.

To bring along to my dad's, we are doing tofurkey, mashed potatoes with tofutti cream cheese, carmelized brussels sprouts, and a sweet potato brulee if I get really adventurous. Maybe pear-cranberry upside down cake.

pinksprklybarefoot Can we come to your house for Thanksgiving? Seriously, though, I'm love to know your cornbread stuffing recipe.

Lilmamibella If you have a natural foods store that sells meat analogs, look in that section and you might find some kind of roast beef-like slices of some kind. Otherwise, try a marinated (with soy sauce, a little something sweet, garlic, ginger, etc.) portabello burger. Hope that helps!

Lightlife makes a "beef BBQ" that might hit the spot.

Hello pregnant vegans!

I just got my u/s this morning and, from all appearances, we'll be having another healthy baby BOY some time in April! I'm just relieved that everything (heart, brain, organs, bone measurements, placenta) looks good at this point.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Congrats Catemom! My u/s said girl but I am having a hard time fully trusting it. LOL.

On the turkey day topic - we'll be spending it with DH's family - a first for me. My mother in law keeps asking what to buy to have on hand and is perusing a vegan cookbook for ideas so I know I'll be in good hands - I just hope she doesn't go too out of her way for me. Also everyone sort of helps out by making a side dish so DH and I will make a vegan side or too (though I think one of them will be mashed potatos - which he will be creaming and buttering up for himself and everyone else once mine are set aside).

I'm craving apples like crazy these days!

Oh yeah, I am with you there. I tend to lean towards the carbs and sweets now that I'm in the second trimester, but I cannot get enough of those Pink Lady organic apples! And squash... I could eat squash every day.. yum..

I'm so glad to see this thread. I'm six weeks pregnant- just got the official test done. I've been vegan for twelve years or so.

I'll be going to a birth center my sister has used, and she's vegetarian so I don't think I'll have problems as a vegan there, and it's in the artsy area of town where there are lots of vegans and vegetarians compared to elsewhere.

My family isn't doing Thanksgiving. And I think I'm glad because I sure am having trouble eating. Up til this week I was ravenous and eating everything in sight, and now everything tastes awful, and right when I need to be eating more, I can only eat a little bit at a time.

Normally I'm so healthy about the way I eat and now that I really need to, I am finding it's not in the least easy.

I wish there was a magic answer, "Do this and you'll be fine." But argh, there's not.

Congrats Selkiewoman! It's really hard to get the healthy food in while you're in the first trimester. My midwife said not to worry about it too much - that the baby is so little then that it will take all it needs from you. Just eat what you can manage and don't feel bad. I think a lot of people find fruit goes down easier than veggies.

I'm happy. DH and I went out to dinner to one of my fave restaurants -it's all organic and has tons of vegan dishes and lots of fresh juices - also serves fish and white meat for the non veg crowd. Anyway, I'd been wishing and wishing they would open near my office and the gal told me they have one in the works! Yay! Not sure exactly when it will open but I'm so thrilled that I will be able to get veggie juice while I'm at work!

Have a great weekend everyone! DH and I are taking a road trip to Napa tomorrow to try out a new veggie restaurant that has been getting rave reviews from the meat eating food critics. It's called Ubuntu. I've been wanting to try it for a while and figured we better do it before the baby come.
