...just in time for Halloween! I tried to post on the original, but it's been archived, soo....

I as your president welcome ALL of those who mingle in the macabre, thrive on thrills, crave the creepy, are giddy over gore, and just basically have to have horror!

So, what makes your hair stand up? Favorite horror movies, books, personal stories of spookiness?

How did you get into this?

Any remakes or originals you hated?

Halloween one of your favorite holidays??

We'd love to hear from you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To answer my own questions: I loved Dawn of the Dead remake (sick, dark humor+ gore=Me in all my Glory!), American Werewolf in London (see previous parenthesis!), as I kid I grew up on RL Stine and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" (I believe it was Schwartz that wrote/edited these?).
I think my own house I lived in was haunted.
I HATED House on Haunted Hill, the Grudge was lacking in plot and ending, and as someone who has been addicted to Freddy Kreuger and Jason since age 5 or so, FREDDY VS. JASON WAS TERRIBLE!!
Halloween rocks, and DS's costume is ALWAYS hand made, no KMart Yu-Gi-Oh or Spiderman costumes here!
Okay, well, hope to hear from you all....
Mmmmwwaaahh haa haaaaaa!
Spookily Yours,
Kelly
I too am a HUGE horror movie fan! So glad there are other moms out there with this affliction.
I think my favorites are Alien and Halloween. Those two movies are ones I can watch over and over and over!
It probably all started when I was young and my mother took me to see "The Incredible Melting Man." Probably one of the worst B horror movies of the 70's, but it scared the bejeezus out of me at the time!
I think anything past "Aliens" is a waste of time and all of the subsequent Halloween sequels were awful. However, I do have Rob Zombie's remake on my Netflix queue, so I reserve judgement on that one right now. I'm also expecting "The Strangers" to arrive today and am very excited to see it.
Halloween is ABSOLUTELY one of my favorite holidays, there is just nothing like it!
w00t! Somehow I missed the last thread. Glad to be here now. So timely, as well. I just saw the commercial for Saw 5 and I turned to DH and smiled. He said, "Oh jeez." It's kind a joke here - I will watch any and all horror films. Most are terrible.
Favorite films: Alien, Evil Dead, Hellraiser, the Nightmare series, and Phantom. This last movie was so horrifying to watch in the theater, but never had the same effect on video for me. Hm.
Books: The strangest, creepiest, and most magical book I've ever read is "Stardust," by Neil Gaiman. The movie was absolutely sugar coated... but I liked it anyway even though it is a totally different story. I also enjoy his Sandman series - not quite horror but supernatural.
Personal spookiness: F.K. really, honestly, truly bothers me. I've had dreams of this character which have chilled me to the bone. And yet, I do enjoy the movies. I agree that Freddy vs. Jason was terrible, tho I did enjoy The Final Nightmare.
I've always been into creepy stories, I dunno why. As a kid I read books by Christopher Pike, & John Saul. I was always disappointed by "Ghost Story" collections. I wrote a horror story in 6th grade that was published in the local paper
Remakes have always bothered me, but I continue to see them.
I do like Halloween but now that I have a child I have been appalled by the realness and gore of current H'W decorations. I mean, sheesh. I used to be much more into dressing up myself and such, but now it's all about the little girl For her first H'W (this one) she's a fairy. My own personal best costumes have been a unicorn , a bondage fairy , and Purgatory from the Lady Death comic series .
I grew up on horror films. My mother isn't much for gore, more atmosphere, I suppose, so I was older before I saw a lot of films from the eighties and early nineties, but we watched a lot of Stephen King films and anything on vampires.
My sister is still terrified of Chucky from Child's Play thanks to an unfortunate viewing when she was a child.
Someone mentioned the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween. My review, without ruining it, is this: before turning into standard horror fare, he does give a much better explanation than there ever was in John Carpenter's version so it's worth a view for that. I love Rob Zombie's Devil's Rejects-I hope he can make more films to this standard.
I really only enjoy sequels until they've made a second or third, then that's more than enough. I think if they would have kept Saw as a trilogy it would have been excellent. Same for Halloween if they would have kept it the double feature (I did love H2O but only because of my girl crush on Jamie Lee Curtis), Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the Thirteenth (really, the first two there as well), and Aliens. I love Alien Resurrection only for the water scene-I have a serious thing for water creatures in any capacity, they both terrify and intrigue me and I'll watch the worst movies for a taste, lol.
I don't like many remakes at all, though I thought the remake of Dawn of The Dead may have even been better than the first. It had horror, comedy, tragedy, and gore all in one.
I'm a sucker for zombie films and anything related, such as the Evil Dead series (I love Bruce Campbell-anyone see Bubba Ho Tep?) and Shaun of the Dead (priceless) along with the must see Dawn, Day, Night, Land, and Diary series. Why can I not remember that director's name right now when I love him so? It must be pregnancy brain mush!
The last few good horror films I've seen were Cloverfield and Thirty Days of Night (also enjoyed the comic book).
I'm going to watch The Strangers tonight and I'm very excited! I've been waiting since it was in theaters.
As far as books, I also enjoy Neil Gaiman (much love!!) but don't consider him really horror at all. I loved The Crow by James O Bar, and I enjoy Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Bentley Little. I also grew up loving Fear Street! I could never really get into John Saul, though I'll read him occasionally and really did like the Blackstone Chronicles when it came out. I also really enjoy comics for their horror and fantasy.
mm well, i don't get scared easily, but if i have to mention my favorite horror movies, i'll say [REC], Halloween, Friday the 13th and The Exorcist, seriously the oldies are the best, nowadays "Horror" movies suck, oh and I also like the old version of "The Omen"
Favorite Books: Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist(again!)
My uncle is a BIG horror fan!!! He introduced me to the horror movie world
I hate all the remakes, most of them are horrible, no wait. ALL remakes are horrible. I like the Saw movies though.
Halloween is not my favorite holiday, but I enjoy looking and creating my DD's costume. I'm lost this year though lol.
I strongly reccomend [REC], there's this movie called Quarantine, that's the remake of [REC], Quarantine was the worst movie that i've ever seen, it was just horrible and a waste of money BUT i reccomend [REC] if you like zombie movies.
Was Cloverfield an horror film? I must have missed something, i just thought it was an action movie
I'm a huge horror movie fan - although I don't get to watch them like I used to! One evening when dh and I got a babysitter and actually got to go out on a date, he took me to see 1408! How I love that man!
I'm going to have to catch up on this thread later because this little baby growing inside me is kicking my butt and making me want to hurl! Blech. Must go lay down.....
Before I go though, for those of you who also like to READ horror - we have a book club going in the book club forum. Come join us!!!
Favorites...
Nightmare on Elm Street - seriously, the ONLY movie to ever, ever, ever give me nightmares. Oh, and I have "1,2 Freddy's coming for you" on my ipod. That song scares DH like no other. I like all of the sequels too.
SAW - Just thought t was smart and creepy. I've seen the sequels, not as great but still good.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the ORIGINAL. The remake(s) made me want to throw things. I enjoyed the sequel too.
Carrie - the original only
Child's Play - like my favorite movie when I was 9 (well, that and Weird Science)
The Grudge (1 and 2) - horrible/silly plot but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO scary. YIKES. I watched it through my fingers!
Oh, and I know it's not a movie, but I adored Tales From the Crypt. So cheesy but awesome when you're a kid. The Cryptkeeper was SO hilarious!
Candyman - pretty scary, yet disturbing.
The Others - AMZING MOVIE! LOVED IT! DD an I watch it ll the time. SO good!
Psycho - who doesn't like Psycho? I even liked all the sequels. Heard the remake was rubbish, though.
Can we count Shawn of the Dead because that i one of my favorite movies of all-time. Awesomeness at it's best.
***********************************
I do love horror films but it's soooo hard to find good ones. I hated:
House of a Thousand Corpses - seriously WTF? Worst movie ever. I heard Devil's Rejects is good but I'm still too mad at HoTC.
Feast - did anyone see this steaming pile??? I will NEVER get that time back. Literally the wort movie I've ever seen.
30 Days of Night
28 Days Later (and whatever the Hell the sequel was named... Another 28 Days Later???)
The Ring - the plot had so many hole it just made me angry. I thought it was so stupid.
****************************
Oh, and has anyone seen the Japanese film "Audition"? It's supposed to be the sickest, scariest movie.
I really want to see Let the Right One In, the Swedish vampire movie. It's supposed to be excellent.
post #9 of 32
Audition scary? No, I don't think so. The last 20 minutes or so are bloody and just crazy. LOL I love that film though. You almost have no idea what kind of movie you are watching. You feel like something is kind of off but at first, it just seems like a drama. Things get a bit weird and you start to think, Ok, this is it. Then WHAM, things take a turn for the worse.
If you want to get scared by weirdness, try Cure or Pulse (not the remakes...). Those scare the beejesus outta me! But I love them.
I Love scary movies and I LOVE Halloween! I so far have been able to keep the costumes homemade and slightly scary, but worry as my girls get older they will have an opinion!
I used to rent every cheesy ridiculous horror movie ever made! I will still watch just about anything - most of them at least make me jump - even the bad ones. I don't like the new "torture" genre, but the first Saw and Wolf Creek did freak me out a bit. I haven't watched many others like those.
As a kid, the first Elm Street, Halloween, and Candyman totally freaked me out. As an adult, I am one of the few who was terrified by Blair Witch (the first one). I liked 28 Days Later, the Dawn of the Dead Remake, and Shaun of the Dead. 30 days of night was good, but I thought it had some unused potential. The Ring did scare me a bit. I must admit to liking the Scream trilogy Agree with pp that House of 1000 Corpses was so bad I haven't seen Devil's Rejects... There are so many others... I agree with most of what has been posted above!
How was The Strangers?
PS - Come on up to Book Clubs - a couple of us are trying to start a horror book club. We might start with the Haunting of Hill House, but are open to suggestions!
I second the thought that is was not an especially scary film. I saw it for the reasons you stated (I know, I'm sick! ) and I was totally disappointed.
This was years ago, before the Japanese scary film trend started. I have discovered I don't really like the Japanese scary films.
The worst horror movie ever was The Wishmaster. Nasty, sick, gross, not scary, just sick, sick, sick!!!!! I've never seen so many people walk out of a movie before in my life. Blech.
I didn't mind the first Scream - I thought it could have been better. I went to see it by myself. I think dh was in boot camp, and the radio deejay said it was a spoof!!! I was sitting in the dark theater after the first fifteen minutes threatening revenge on the deejay because it was so not a spoof!!!
I loved Psycho so much as a kid that I kept saying I was going to have my license plate say Psycho. Luckily, my mom talked me out of that! I haven't seen the remake.
I love horror movies! although people mostly seem to mean slasher movies now, or torture -- I like creepy supernatural movies that spook me out.
The Haunting
The Others
Blair Witch (I know it didn't work for some people, but it creeped me something fierce! I may never go camping now ...)
Anything by Hammer
Psycho (OK, that one's not supernatural)
Carnival of Souls
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Howling
The Wolf Man
I Walked with a Zombie
All the Roger Corman Poe movies
Black Sunday
If it's got spiderwebs all over it and people are wandering around exploring with candles, I'll watch it, pretty much.
DH and I had a mini horror-fest last night. From 9pm to 1am it was us, some blankets, soda, popcorn, SAW IV and The Strangers.
SAW IV was pretty good. The ending was another "OH! Nice." that totally sets up SAW V. It wasn't 'scary' but was pretty damn full of BLOOD-N-GUTS!
The Strangers... AWFUL. SOOOOOOOO boring. It dragged on and on and on and on. At one point, I told DH we should watch it at x2 speed and stop it when we actually saw some action. Even the 'climax' (if there was one) was dull. I started laughing like "THIS is IT???" The ONLY saving grace was Scott Speedman. My GOD he is gorgeous.
We just love horror movies. All of us in this house. Even the little kids. Looking for suggestions for Holloween. Dh and I like the old b/w movies the best. How many of us watch horror movies late at night, with the lights off? We do when we can. I don't have a favorite horror movie. Has anyone seen Split Second with Rutger Hauer? If you get the chance to see it, watch it with surrond sound with the lights off late at night. LOL. We did this once and it scared the bejeezus out of our downstairs neighbor. LOL.
love and blessings
This is my TRIBE! I finally found it!
We are a whole horror loving family. My parents, my sister, my husband, even my kids. All my 7-year-old talks about is R.L. Stine's Goosebumps and monsters, I'm afraid his first grade teacher & classmates are going to think he's a freak.
I personally am a HUGE zombie enthusiast. My absolute favorites are 28 Days/Weeks Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake. Looove those. I also have a soft spot for the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, especially #1 and #3. Other favorites:
Pet Sematary
Rob Zombie's Halloween/Michael Myers remake
Frailty
30 Days of Night (lovelovelove)
The Descent
The Ring
And an old USA movie called "Don't Go To Sleep." I ordered it a couple of years ago from a website that stole my money and never sent me the movie. I can't find it anywhere else. Sad, because it was a really good one.
I can take or leave the Saw/Hostel genre of movies with all the over-the-top blood and gore.
I have so much more to say on this topic, but the baby's crying! I'll be back.
