Bike seat for my VERY plus sized bumm

Oh boy!

I was thrifting this weekend and I stumbled upon a cruiser bicycle. In my obsessiveness - I threw it in my car, hopped on craigslist got DD a bike seat, went to target got a helmet for her and off we went. I havent been on a bike in 20 years but we are good! And Vi Pie Loves it!

Nothing hurts....but my butt! I am a size 24/26 on the bottom and even a gel seat is killing me. It hurts in between my cheeks. Any ideas?

I could ride longer -if my butt didnt hurt.

That has nothing to do with your bum size..bike seats are a killer..lol

I wonder if you could get the larger seat like what is on the recumbant bikes. I'm a size 12 and couldn't ever use a regular seat either. My dh has a good seat on his bike but it's hanging in the garage so I don't know what it is.

Good for you for getting out there!

I second that about bike seats. I'm a 2/4 and they are still a killer. You kinda just have to suck it up! You may want to buy a pair of riding shorts, which have built in padding, instead of a new seat. DH has a pair of shorts he paid a fortune for (close to $200), but said they really make a difference on long rides. You don't need that fancy of a pair, but you might find a decent pair for around the price of a bike seat at your local bike shop.

Yeah, it's not so much the bike seat, although honestly...gel seats can actually be worse than a good-fitting hard seat. Part of it is a good pair of bike shorts with adequate cushioning. The bigger part, though, is that (like s&s said), you just have to suck it up until you build up a good callous in your girly bits! A week or two of regular biking should do it. GL!

I have heard of special bike seats that are more shaped like a toilet seat, but I can't think of the name of them. They're supposed to be a big hit, if I could remember the name you could google it

Like everyone else said it doesnt matter how big or small you are bike seats hurt your bum. DH got a big butt seat and it was way worse than the regular seat. After a 2-3 weeks you get used to it and it doesn't hurt any more.

Another vote for just biking regularly to get your body's parts used to it, then it stops hurting. I have found that wearing padded bike shorts and/or an overnight (cloth) pad really helps too. Something like this HTH

When my hubby and I took up bicycling this summer, we both had the same problem, We went to Walmart and ended up getting pretty comfortable seats for....I think $15 or $20. They have a very wide but area, and then the part that sticks out in the front, is very short and nubby so it doesn't ram up places it shouldn't.

After researching--I learned one of the biggest problems causing the pain is having your tailbone on the seat all the time, that is why alot of new seats have a little dip in the middle by the back of the seat, so your tailbone isn't constantly hitting the seat and hurting. Another big problem is the front of the seat jamming up in the front and hurting, as mentioned above (that was my main problem). This seat (also at Walmart) is supposed to address that: that:http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=9207800 . Our seats look almost like that, just with a little bigger nub in the front.
Good luck!

http://bikeseats.org/bicycle-seats.htm has some interesting and comfy looking seats.
This site, http://www.realseat.com/, also looks interesting.

You don't really want a comfy LOOKING seat. My seat looks like it would be excruciatingly painful, but it's actually great. The wider and squishier the seat, the more uncomfortable they are, in my experience.

And sometimes all you need to do is adjust the tilt of your seat. As mentioned, if the seat tilts up, it can cause problems, so you should double check to make sure that the seat is adjusted correctly for you. It certainly might be worth taking the bike into a good local bike shop to have them check the fit and give you some IRL seat advice.
