CP Vax UGH!

About 6 years ago I had to get the CP vax as a condition of employment at a local hospital. I was 24 at the time and had never had CP.

I had a pretty severe reaction at the injection site (I had a rock hard HOT red raised area about the size of a can of veggies in diameter) and was sick for several weeks afterward. My dr. put it in my med. record that I am NEVER to get another vax (not that I would).

We don't vax DD because of this and because of the extent of the allergies both DH and I have. I want to expose her to CP at some point so that she has natural immunity.

I decided to have my titres checked because I heard CP was going around my area. I got the note from the dr. today. I am NOT immune.

So not only did I get a vax I didn't want AND have a reaction to it, it didn't even work.

WTH do I do now? I don't want DD to end up in my boat-30 and never had CP. I'm not going to vax her...but I'm terrified of how sick I will end up when she gets them, because I'm sure I will get them.

Help?

Have you read Aviva Jill Romm's Vaccination book? The last part of the book goes into detail about supporting the immune system during illness, specifically for each VAD (vaccine available disease).

Apparently I got CP twice (just found out recently about the first time). The second time I was about 14, so not exactly a baby. I was fine, it just itched like heck for a week or two! I'm hoping DS will get it naturally, if not I am still not getting the shot for him. Too many problems with it. If he decides when he is older that he does want it, as long as he knows all the ramifications, then that is his choice.

Here is a great collection of articles on CP and the vax:

My DS 1 got the CP vax. We were vaxing him on schedule but I had refused CP only. On the visit when CP was usually given I had refused it but DH took him to the next visit and they convinced him to give it to him. Now with DS 2, who is completely unvaxed, I am hoping that he will pick up CP and that DS 1 isn't immune even though he had the vax and he can get the full immunity so he won't get it when he is an adult and the vax has worn off because like you mentioned it can be worse on adults.

Titres are not a reliable test for immunity. Some people who show no immunity do not get infected and the other way around as well. I would not put much stock into it UNLESS you need it for some reason.

Rely on your natural immune system to carry you through. You may be immune no matter what the blood results tell you. We don't know much about the immune system at all. Immunology is only a research field. All manipulation of the immune system is only guess work.
