I just won the farmer's market raffle. :: We had just gotten home and were eating lunch and they called and said we won. I was so excited and expected a nice big bag of produce which I got (apples, peaches, spinach, lettuce, onions, radishes, pumpkins, goards) PLUS I got a huge gorgeous bouquet of flowers and 6 pints of rasberries and caramel corn too!

I feel like Miss America.
That's awesome! Yay!!!

Yep, we do that every year. Warm is more important than pretty Actually, I left the plastic plus a towel hanging over one of our windows all year and just took it down about a month ago. I didn't feel like dragging the ladder up the stairs to get it down, I guess. I should have just left it there until spring.

Our house is 85 years old, so we can't get the cheap vinyl windows. They would look so stooopid, and ruin any charm in this place. But wood or fiberglass is way expensive. blah.

Me too! My mom was single and worked. I was in charge of my little sister after school from the time I was 8 yrs old. We went to a neighbor's apartment before school in the mornings.

Oooh, I need a good book to read!

The best parts of my day Naia and Josephine dancing their naked butts off before bed. Spending the day lounging with my little family and having nothing to worry about.

An embarrassing moment from my past My sister and I spent a week on a boat with my aunt and uncle when I was 8 or 9 years old. It wasn't a yacht or anything. There was no toilet. We had to ask for "the bucket" and then my uncle would dump it overboard. I was far too mortified to do that. After a couple days of holding it, I peed in my sleep. In the morning I changed my pants, stuffed them in my bag and hoped nobody noticed.

If I had to eat only one food for the rest of my life it would be
Turkey, avocado, goat cheese and crunchy lettuce sandwich on sourdough. Maybe with cucumber, or red pepper. Or a salad with those ingredients plus strawberries? That way I'll get more than one food. :

Anyone know where we could get a good deal on firewood? Oh, and I should add, we have no truck.
I don't know what a good deal is since I haven't bought firewood in years.... (and we had to split and load it ourselves.) But here is this:

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/for/866408088.html

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/grd/866291881.html (this one offers half cords and 1/6 as well.) It is also a business we use often.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/for/866120087.html

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/for/864778479.html

Tad cheaper than the others but charges a delivery fee so it may end up being the same.

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/for/863921429.html

Now this one is a deal, but you haveta get a truck and split it yourself, maybe an MDC mama has a truck and can help, or you can rent one.

HTH. Off to make breakfast.

So $250/cord seems like the standard. How much wood is in a cord? Wondering if we want a cord or a half. We hang our clothes out on the covered porch, I wouldn't want it completely taken up with wood. Could be stacked up under the eaves with a tarp over it, I suppose. I don't really know the finer points of storing firewood...we always kept ours in the garage.

Not going to be renting a truck any time soon, and as for splitting wood? I don't think so.

a cord is a LOT. we got half a cord last summer, and we still have lotttttts....
Ok, a LOT = 4'x4'x8'.

Oh, that reminds me, Sprog killed my tape measure. He pulled it out and let it snap back over and over until the little tab broke off through metal fatigue. I keep needing it, wondering where it is, and then remembering that it's gone. I've been in a hardware store at least twice since it broke, but didn't get a new one.

You know, Lego are such a double-edged sword. It keeps the kids busy and absorbed for the longest time, but then you have all these bricks all over the place, and you step on them and they hurt.

Oh, the Monday morning late start thing? It was a miscommunication. And I wasn't the only one affected. But it's sorted now. I love getting my dander up for nothing. Ho hum.

i saw what i thought was a cooool tip on lego or small building toys - get a big kiddie pool and have all the legos in there for the kids to actually get INTO to build. if you have room....

Good idea, but no, we don't have room. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if I could simply sweep them up, as I could in the old house, but my housemate likes area rugs, so that doesn't work.

I'm going to take in the laundry, then take the chitlins to the park.

Beth, did you get to catch up on any sleep this weekend? I'm glad the Monday morning thing was a misunderstanding.

We are so clueless about wood. Of course, we didn't have to ever think about warmth in Hawaii. Then we moved to a duplex that didn't have a fireplace. Then, in Winston, we cut our own. Now it seems weird to have to pay for it.

Awesome idea about the legos!

the other idea is just spread out a sheet...
How much wood you get depends on what you want it for.

Is this going to be your main source of heat or are you just going to have a fire on occasion?

If it is your main source of heat, you need to get a least a cord I would think. If you just use it once in awhile and half cord or even a quarter should be OK.

We stored ours outside against the fence. We didn't even tarp it. Just brought a days worth or so into the garage and replaced it so we would always have dry wood. This however, was in California.

Here we only have a fake gas fireplace. Bah. I wanted a pellet stove.. but it looks like converting the gas fireplace into a pellet stove is not something WE can't do and since the stoves cost more than I thought... it looks like it isn't going to happen.

I think I have bribed DH into registering.
