Dingos Run, Walk, Wog, Jog, Swim, Bike and Stretch into October! - Page 9

I agree with what Gaye said ... you know what's best for you especially after all that training, and you shouldn't change to something you're unsure of or uncomfortable with.

I am in awe of the marathon runners, I don't know if I'll ever be able to do that. I'd love to, but I don't know if my back would hold up and if I'd be able to motivate myself, so all you marathoners have my extreme admiration.
I think one of the people I work for at my work study job is doing a marathon this weekend, she mentioned going to CA, is there one there? I know that the one DrJen is doing is Chicago, but wasn't sure about CA?

I would not change horses mid stream.... Do whatever worked for your long runs.

On the fuel belt, if you want to wear it and are used to it, then do it! I wore mine just to carry my gels and then got water at the stops to take them. I ditched it at mile 20 w/ my DH and tucked my last gel upside down in my bra (kate~mom's suggestion)

On the fueling, most gels have carbs and electrolytes and if you are taking in electrolytes thru the gel, there is absolutely no need for gatorade. With that said, you might get some strange aversion to them or craving for salt/gatorade toward the end, and then you should just do what feels right for your body.

I wanted to eat like 20 salt packets right around mile 22...

I am really getting excited about tracking both of you this weekend. Are both of you running Sat? what times???

I've never run a marathon, or even a half..... But I agree with the pp's and think that it only makes sense for you to do the race exactly the same way that you did your long runs. If you don;t drink gatorade, espec since the premix stuff is HFCS, I'd def avoid it during the race. espec if you can carry your "tried and true" Gu's.

I am curious about what he said about the salt. Just curious after my brother was so passionate about salt. Not that I think you should do it for this race, just curious as to why salt seems to be a "hot" topic .......

Mothercat, I tried to reply this am, but MDC went down. That swim sounds awesome. I love it when you get into a rhythm and feel like you could swim forever. good for you!!!!!

My Dr says that I do not have IR. My Blood glucose and insulin levels at fasting, 30 min, 60 min, 90 min and 120 min were all below normal. My BP is normal. My Trigycerides, HDL, LDL and the related ratios are all "lower" the normal levels. So except for my thyroid, I'm a perfectly healthy girl..... with a hugely fat stomach. 3

I got teh book the IR diet from teh library today. I'm going to read and follow it anyway, since I seem to have so many symptoms. I'm also adding Chromium Piccolonate to my daily supplement pile. I think I will start trackign my diet again, as that is a proven weight loss tool. I also may get my Vo2 and resting caloric levels tested at the gym. I'm actually disappointed, b/c I thought those meds woudl help me. I guess I shoudl be relieved since I normally don't like taking meds... but I really do think *something* is still hormonally wrong with me.

Just moving ahead and doing what I can within my control.

Atl dingos, I need anotehr 5K to train for.. and I need a 10K in Feb for a PTree qualifier. Wanna plan some races together with me : (you don;t have to run WITH me though : )

I'm also going to do that tri in June, even if I'm still fat
post #164 of 794
Gigi...I haven't registered yet...but I'm planning to do a 5K on Nov 15th in Lawrenceville. It's called Run for Shelter.
I really liked the womens 5K last winter I did with HBM (and her dd) and MB. Would love to do that with all y'all!

towsonmama - I'd not try anything new, either. There are some electrolytes in your gel, and I don't see how carrying the fuel belt or not makes the difference in overhydrating. Mine chafes, and I can carry my gels in outer shorts pockets, but my running partner prefers to wear hers as she wears pants with no pockets. Slower marathoners do need to be cautious about overhydrating/hyponatremia - but if you drink to thirst you should be okay. If you start to feel bad, you can always drink some gatorade on the course - perhaps half and half with water if you aren't used to it. Chicago has the Gatorade Endurance formula on the course, which is higher in electrolytes and not so sweet - it's my favorite electrolyte beverage. I think it might have been a good idea for you to experiment with electrolyte beverages before now, but at this point, better to do what you know. My running partner gets ill to the point of vomiting from some types of gatorade or powerade - you'd hate to find that out during your marathon!
I'm planning to carry 4 gels (vanilla bean with caffeine - my tried and true gel) and drink a mix of water and gatorade on the course. That's what I trained with and has worked well for me.
You are going to do great! I'm betting you are at least 1/2 hour faster than me! I am an anxious mess - but now mostly about the weather. It's supposed to be high 70s to 80 on Sunday. Since race time isn't until 8 am, I'm thinking I'll still be running by 1 pm or so, so will see the peak of the heat. Blech. However, I did most of my long runs in heat, including one 20 miler in 80+ with high humidity, so I just keep reminding myself of that fact - and the fact that I hate to run in the cold or rain, so I should quit complaining.
My running partner just called me while I was typing this to say her dh just called her and said he is having chest pain. Please, please, send some positive vibes this way both for his health and her sanity.

Ugh - remind me not to wish for things, will you all? I wanted to have some babies this week so I don't have to fret about them this weekend. In particular, my client who will be 41 weeks tomorrow, or the second time mom who is 40 2/7 now. Instead, my primigravida client came in today with high blood pressure, 4+ protein in the urine, vomiting and visual disturbances. Thankfully, at least she is term (due tomorrow.) I just placed cervidil and we are probably in for a long haul induced labor now. I just hope she can have her baby by tomorrow night so I can get some sleep the night before the night before my marathon.

mothercat - I meant to comment before on your client. Sometimes, things just don't go well, you know? And if you didn't question your care, you wouldn't be a good midwife - but the fact that you do means you are always willing to learn from a situation. And with all those may or may nots, it must not be such an obvious case anyway. I hope your client and baby are doing well today.

towsonmama - when i ran my marathon, i ran with a water bottle because that's how i trained. even though there were well spaced water stops, I wanted to be able to drink whenever i wanted and to be able to skip a water stop if i felt like it. in hindsite, i probably didn't need it and could have done it without the bottle - but what the heck. it wasn't like i was setting course records or anything. carrying a bottle, or a fuel belt, is not going to make you win or lose but may make you feel more comfortable while you're out there. i don't think there's any particular reason to need a sports drink during the run. it might be nice to know how it acts with your stomach prior to the race, in case you're craving something while you're out there. but you'll be fine. relax.

the most helpful thing for me at my marathon was to break the course into smaller chunks. I ran the Marine Corp, so I broke it into the part before the bridge, then out the length of Rock Creek parkway, then back the parkway, then up the Mall, then back the Mall, then the funny penninsula which i knew would be the hardest part of the race, then off to Crystal City (or whatever that place was called) and then the Pentagon and finish. Having smaller goals made it much more doable. But then again, I also went with the attitude that I was embarking on a 5 hour running tour of DC, I'm not the most competitive.

Had an appt with the cardiologist today. Nice guy, good appointment. No answers yet, and I even put it out there that I may just be plumb crazy and this could all in my mind and I should just get over myself. Earlier tests showed some funny things going on, but nothing alarming. But yet describing to him what happens when i'm exercising made him wonder just what was going on. So, next week I get on the treadmill at the hospital for some test that will surely cost me a boatload of money. have to rest my knee so that i can get up to speed on the mill.

Mandy good luck next week with the treadmill test

mothercat I second what drjen said, what makes excellent practitioners in any field is the willingness to honestly evaluate their work and to learn.

drjen you are going to be so amazing and I am going to be thinking about you all day saturday until I hear from you. I just canNOT wait to hear your report.

towsonmama - ignore him. Do what works for you. And then be prepped at the actual race that if your body tells you something different, be flexible. Worst case scenario you end up in a portopotty for a few minutes. You too are going to ROCK IT!!!

I am doing a 12 mile trail race saturday - something totally new, I'm excited!

You guys...dh and I will be married 10 years tomorrow. I just spent over an hour writing a letter that just made me bawl. Wow. Ten years.

Congratulations on the 10 years.I looked up traditional gifts and 10 years is pewter, although the modern versions are aluminum and diamonds.
Hope you have a nice day celebrating.

Thank you for the hug. The family sent me home last night and were going to call today to update me. Haven't heard anything, but the docs were being really good yesterday about explaining all the possibilities, choices, and consequences. The parents were well informed. I hope all went well, but I don't have privileges at the hospital.
Thanks, everyone! I think I needed to get the panic attack out of my system. I'm feeling much better today and didn't even dream about the marathon last night. My plan is to buy some lemon-lime Gatorade on the way to work today and drink it this morning. I know my body is under a lot more strain when running but it should give me an inkling if the Gatorade is an absolute no-no.

Here's the link for runner tracking. My bib number is 1140. We've signed up with the 4:30 pace group, which will actually put us at a slower pace than any of our long runs, but I think it's a smart decision for our first marathon.
All of this marathon talk is makin gme think that maybe I might want to do one sometime. Especially if I could run/walk it slowly. My main motivation woudl be to get a "26.2" magnet for the back of my car ing:

bbm - my marathon is Sunday (just so you aren't waiting frantically all day Sat for a race report!) towsonmama is tomorrow!

I'm 48 hours a way from standing on the start line of the Chicago marathon!!

And my client is still pregnant. Please send me some good labor vibes.
doctorjen ~ Wow! It feels like we all went on this journey of training with you.. I wish I could be there to cheer you along. I'll be with you in spirit!

Good luck towsonmama!!! :

I went for another wog last night with my puppy, and I can finally run without feeling like I'm going to pee myself. Maybe it's just a coincidence or Sprout has moved away from my bladder some - I don't know but it feels good to jog a little bit.

I'm hoping to get in some yoga today.

Good luck towsonmama and doctorjen! I can't wait to read race reports.

Congrats on 10 years of marriage babybugmama!

I'm heading home from college this weekend to say goodbye to my little brother who is off to Marine Corps Boot Camp for 13 weeks. It's so new and weird to me. So many emotions. Also have 3 miles to run tomorrow, and 5 on Sunday. 5 will be the longest I've run, so I'm hoping it goes well.

Is that Penelope me or Penelope Penelope? If it's me I'm curious to know who it is! And yes, this is one small world!

That would totally be my take on a marathon too! I keep looking at marathons as an excuse to tour an interesting city (not that I've got anything really on the schedule )
Good luck with that test, wouldn't it be nice if it could be something simple, like when you find a thorn in your tire and you can just pop it out and patch it an that's it, you know?

Oh yeah, that too. The sticker and vacation. Gigi, maybe we should look at a map together!

So I did a good circuit workout last night. I was hosting this one, we usually have three or four moms and assorted tots getting together for it. Last night only one mom came - trying not to feel dissed over here. But whatever, I haven't really felt the click with these particular moms so, oh well. At least the one came so I didn't scrap the workout!

Dr Jen and Towson - I'm so excited to track you guys! I've got it all bookmarked for tomorrow! Tomorrow!!!!! DrJen - I hope that mom has already given birth by now and that the others all either have super speedy labors and births or call to say they aren't feeling it at. all. And that they won't until Tuesday so you have some recovery time, I can't imagine squatting to catch post-race! Towson, yeah, disregard weirdo expo guy. What the does he know about you? Nada. You'll do great! And have a blast! And then you'll both be marathoners!!!!

Marathon excitement..... (I just love that one)

Speaking of I talked to dh and my new boss at work about my spring marathon and it's about to get put on the calendar....any dingoes are welcome, it's this one. I have researched a lot and this one looks fun and relatively flat, and we are going to take a little vacation afterwards at the ILs further down in Florida. soo.....if anyone else wants to come down south...there is a 7 hour time limit, Gigi???????

I did 10 miles this morning and felt good, just over 10 min pace. I started to get fuzzy just over an hour and then I did some clif bloks, the cola with caffeine. They tasted kind of gross but WOW it was like an energy pill! fabulous! I am used to caffeine though but I would really recommend them for a nice kick. Oh and speaking of chafing, I got a new fuel belt and I really like it, but I chafed horribly on my back! youch.

tomorrow's ds's 3rd birthday party! can you all believe it?
Anybody want to come do the Breast Cancer Marathon with me? I'm 90% sure that I want to do that one. I need to get myself running more and I'm really worried about my commitment around the holidays. I know me too well. :

I should run tonight while dd is at tennis, but I have make and new clothes on today and I want to stay looking kind of nice. : Is that the worst excuse you've ever heard or what?
Actually Beth, I am looking at Tampa and that one looks really cool. The course looks awesome-no giant hill at mile 25. I wonder if hotels are incredibly expensive during Gasparilla? I've heard it's insane! I'm seriously considering that one now, especially since it would give me 2 extra weeks to prepare and wouldn't be on dd's birthday. Hmmmm. And dh really loves pirates....
Oh cool-Virgin marathoners get to ring a pirate bell at the end!
Oooooo.... I'm feeling all excited and tingly for this weekend's marathoners! Go towsonmama! Go DrJen!!!!

And so excited for all those planning a marathon for spring 2009!!! Both of those Florida runs look great . No marathons for me, I'm afraid. After this half in November, I'm sticking to 5Ks and 10Ks from here out. Unless I can talk my doctor into a Synvisc injection for my knees .

Happy 10th Anniversary BBM!!! Congratulations !
