Amalgam fillings replaced while still nursing?

Hi all!

I have two VERY small amalgam fillings that need to be replaced. Both are showing signs of decay around the edges of the amalgam and I've had them for over 25 years.

I just had my teeth checked by holistic dentist a few days ago who said it's fine to wait to have them removed until my DS (2.5 years old) is finished nursing.

The problem is that my son seems NOWHERE near ready to wean. These fillings will probably need to come out within in the year at least. One already feels cold/warm sensitive. :

So, if all goes bad and they have to come out before DS is weaned how is this done? I've never even pumped before.

Dentist is very cautious about removal and uses dam and nose ventilator. He also said that since fillings are so tiny that he can drill around them and they should come out in one solid piece without having to grind them down. Sounds like the 'mercury' won't have too much of a chance to get swallowed or inhaled.

Thoughts?

I'll have to admit this has me so worried... I just hate the thought of having to wean my son since he's such a little mama's boy right now.

Another sucky thing: I just spent 2.5 hours in the dentist chair early this week getting the ceramic fillings done (expensive! Whew!).

Sigh. I hate having my teeth messed with!!

Even with a dam and separate air source for you, you will get extra mercury when they're removed. I did, and my dentist is serious about safety precautions because she thinks mercury-containing fillings are harmful to peoples' health. Most people are healthier than me, so they may not notice, but it's still there. I'm not sure how much difference in mercury exposure there is between different shapes/sizes of fillings, but I know mine were shallow and not very big--the removal itself was quite fast.

I am flat-out not comfortable having that type of dental work while nursing. Higher levels of mercury circulate for several days, IIRC, before it is either excreted or settles into your organs (most likely a combo of the two). It's a bad position to be in, none of the answers are great, or even good.

Anyway, maybe I sound pretty negative, but I'm having to do a lot of work to fix my health and the health of my two kids due to the havoc that my (now-removed) amalgam fillings caused.

I'm also considering removing fillings. My dentist said it's fine due to the protection. I have a few fillings, and it's affecting my health. He's done many nursing mothers.

It's fillings that have to be redone anyways, and my cycle is pregnant, nursing.... with no pause in between. I could either wait 20+ years, to do it, or have better health now.

Thanks for any advice.

I thought I'd be doing the same thing, basically pregnant, nursing, pregnant, nursing, for quite a while. Changing that plan wasn't an easy choice, but when I looked at my options, weaning my son and getting my dental work done and dealing with the mercury (and other toxins) that had accumulated was the best choice available. Not saying it will be for you, but I recognize that it isn't a no-brainer decision.

OP, it sounds like your dentist is equipped with the proper equipment for safe mercury removal. It IS in the best interest of the dentist to be so equipped as if he/she just drills into the amalgam it will put not only you but themselves and their assistants AND everyone in the clinic at risk for mercury vapours as well. I had 2 very large amalgams removed and a tiny fleck of mercury landed on my gum between the 2 teeth and I nearly jumped to the ceiling from pain, I felt like I'd been hit with a hot poker. The only thing that you didn't mention was proper suction to remove the filling into a holding tank the instant it was removed. Other than that the rubber dam etc. sounded like standard "safe" procedure.

You could pump and dump during the time that your body is detoxing, there is a metal homeopathic liquid that I took to detoxify my body, it was a comprehensive compound for all metal toxins and when you are not feeling sick from the after effects plus one week, you should be free to nurse again but check with a qualified homeopathic doctor for further instructions.

Good luck.
