Search Engine Rankings

I keep reading that having your website listed on another site that is indexed by Google helps increase your search engine rankings. Does having my website in my mothering.com postings count? I occasionally do Google searches to see if I'm coming up and I usually find a lot of my posts.

I'm just trying to understand how all this works.

I think MDC helps. Just a suggestion, you might want to consider using your target keywords for your hyperlink instead of your URL....that will help boost your ranking (right now you're just boosting your ranking for people who search for the term "www.culturesforhealth.com". Search engines will go out and look for keywords and keyphrases and rank those....that's really where it's at!

Looks like something is working...we were crawled by the Googlebot 46 times yesterday! We are also getting lots of traffic. I'm so happy :

Awesome! Can you track where your hits are coming from? If you are getting a lot from Google organic searches, that's a good thing!

If you add Google Analytics to your site, it can tell you where your hits are coming from, as well as what words are being searched for.

Another good stats counter (and more user friendly, I think) is www.sitemeter.com. If you use it, just make sure to set the security setting so that you are the only one who can view the stats (it defaults to letting anyone who visits your site read them).

Our hosting service allows us to see where people are coming from and if it's through a search engine, what they searched under. It's a nice feature.

We are actually getting orders from people who found us on a search engine and my own checks show us appearing the top 10 for many of the key words! Not bad for 7 weeks!

Having your website linked to by another site does two things.

First, it enables Google to find and index your site. That means Google will follow the link from Mothering, for example, to your site. Over time, Google will continue to visit your site and include more pages from your site in the index.

Second, the ranking of your web pages for any particular keyword phrase is determined by more than 100 factors, including how many backlinks you have.

So, if you have 500 links to your web page from other pages that are related to your topic, that are trusted sites, and that use your keyword phrase in their anchor text -- all other things being equal -- your page will rank higher for your keyword phrase than a site with fewer backlinks.

That said, you receive additional benefits from being linked to by other sites, because the other sites' visitors will find you there as well. So not only are you helping to build your ability to rank well for your keyword phrases, you're also benefiting directly from the other sites' visitors.

This, of course, assumes that the other site does have visitors. No worries about that on Mothering...

Great explanation! Thank you!

A blog can help boost your google ranking as well. If you can blog about the benefits of cultured products even 1-2x week the blog posts can be picked up by google. Then you can create links to your products.

I love the wonderful world of blogging :

Good point. I need to get on that. We suddenly have to move (landlord getting divorced and wants his house back) but I'm hoping to get a blog started in the next few weeks.
