I'm nervous...

my son is sick. i know logically that it's JUST A COLD. but what if...what if it's a "VPD" and he isn't vaxed for it and he gets really sick or dies? i know i am being paranoid, but i AM paranoid! these are his symptoms - starting last weekend, he had a fever for 3 days. when that stopped, he got a rash and a cough. i took him to the clinic, they said he has an ear infection. he started medication on thursday morning. so he's had 3 doses now. still has a wicked phlegmy cough. this morning, he started throwing up. he's puked twice today. and he keeps holding his belly, like he has cramps.

now, logically, i am sure that it's just a cold. but are there any VPDs with these symptoms that i should be looking out for? he's 18mo, and was vaxed with the 2, 4, 6mo shots.

thank you for easing my mind...if you can! lol

Did they mention anything about the rash?

Could it have been roseola or rubella? ds1 had rubella at 15mo and ds2 just got over roseola. He had a fever for 2-3 days getting up to almost 103, then broke out in a light rash that lasted for a couple days. He has also had a runny nose. Honestly with the vomiting I would suspect a reaction to the meds. Usually when the kid gets a rash it means he's about done with being sick. Antibiotics mess with the gut and could be causing the upset. jmho. I know it is scary to see your precious baby sick. Are you nursing? If so, nurse, nurse, nurse... bm has good nature-made antibiotics in it that will help your lo get better as fast as possible. I do not think your baby has a scary vad. I'm sorry he is feeling bad. Healing vibes to him.

the clinic doctor said he is sure that the rash is just roseola. and it's almost gone. but if it was the antibiotics, wouldn't they have bothered him right away? he's already had it 3 times now.

i am nursing, but i also work fulltime. he's home right now with his grandma, and i feel so guilty about not being able to be there with him. argh. mommy guilt.

No not necessarily. I can take meds for a couple of days before it starts to mess with me. Almost everything give me terrible cramps, yest infection, and diarrhea. Did you check the list of possible side effects for the meds? The sheet they gave you with the rx should have it on there.

I don't have time to read the other posts so if this is a repeat....forgive me.
Rash and fever is a good thing. Nothing to worry about. Cough is a nuisance. But it will cure itself.
He holds his belly imo because you give him abx, right? That is the problem. And there is no reason for such strong, gut altering medicine. He is puking it because he knows it does him harm.
Most "VPD" start out like that and we got probable hundreds of viruses that at the time do not fall under "VPD". Gosh, rubella is a "VPD". So what?
Even if you would have injected every single vaccine into this little body, he would still get sick from time to time.

Get yourself a book that you can rely on. Learn it by heart. A very good one is from Aviva Jill Romm - Healthy Babies, Healthy Children.

And what I would do for the child is get lots of Vita C into him. Not the kind you chew though, it's not good for teeth. Give him lots of love and undivided attention and watch him. Not because he is in any danger, but because you see first hand how he acts when he is sick. Learn from that. This is how he will most likely react whenever he catches any bug. See that he improves every day and heals himself. He is strong and has an immune system. This is the way it works. Don't get him afraid of being sick. It is a natural part of living. He needs to see that you trust his body and that he rebounds every time.

I wish you strength and patience. He only needs your love because if you don't interfere, I am sure we will be better within a few days.

The abx could be causing the vomiting and the cramps. That is a common reaction when I take them. It actually usually hits me a few days into the abx but it can hit me after I have taken the whole course.

There is a little know side effect where the colon becomes overridden with yeast (because all the good baterial that keep it in line have been killed off).

Most doctors don't know about it because it's not always listed in the article and computer print outs on abx (but it is a long med sounding name at the bottom of package inserts). Took me a while before I could link it to the abx with research. Since doctors don't know about it usually they will dismiss it as related.

For me taking probiotics and anything that helps cleanse the colon (i.e., flax) helps relieve the cramping. Taking the abx with a really bland meal helps with the vomiting. If you are BFing continue because BM has linolic acid which cleans the colon and helps correct gut flora.

The antibiotics I'm allergic to took 2-3 days to cause hives each time. Someone already recommended the Romm book; I also recommend "How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Dr". I would also research how to treat ear infections without antibiotics. You can also get suggestions from the Health and Healing board. I recommend visiting Inside Vaccines as well.

Both my children have had a wheeze, cough, runny nose... for 6 weeks! They had to use Nebulizers because there wheezing got pretty bad!

You vaxed him 2,4,6 months, I am pretty sure he has vaccine immunity in him still!

When they did my daughters antibody titers at 2 years old, she still had alot of vaccine immunity in her! And I had ONLY given her the 2 month vaccines!

Anyways... hope your babe gets better. Its no fun to be sick!

BTW, certain antibiotics KILL my stomach! Try next time to give him a full meal with them!
