Why no driving for 2 weeks??

Why are we not allowed to drive for 2 weeks post partum?? A full 2 weeks is a long time.

no one told me that. :

I've only heard that in relation to c/s's. And I believe in that case its because the risks of a car crash could be catastrophic after major abdominal surgery.

I drove in the first two weeks. No one told me not to, and I had places we needed to go.

I had a NCB and was told by an L&D nurse not to drive for 2 weeks. Something about how your reflexes aren't as good following birth. It wasn't an issue for me... I didn't drive until almost 3 weeks after.

No one told me not to, either. I've never heard of this!

I drove 3 days after my homebirth DH couldn't drive us to our 1st ped appt because he had to stay home and take care of our ill DD#1.

I did feel a bit whoozy, but made sure to take my time while out and eat/drink well.

I've heard the same thing but can't remember the reasoning behind it. I know I haven't always stuck to it.

I thought it related to c/s and meds one might be taking--like narcotics.

Nobody told me not to drive for 2 weeks. I've been kind of distracted while driving though, so maybe they should have.

What's an NCB?

Original Poster here....I was told this after DS's hospital birth and this time around also by my homebirth midwife. Different birthing places, different states even.

It would certainly be convenient to drive sooner than 2 weeks!

I thought it was just with c-sections too, because the incision area could be damaged if you had to slam on the brakes, especially the muscles that get separated. Also, the narcotics. I guess if you had a lot of stitches in your perineum that could get damaged by slamming on the pedal too, but if you don't have any tears, I don't know. Maybe dizziness from blood loss? Huh.

The reasons are because after birth many woman have lost quiet a bit of blood and are still loosing a good amount so that can cause you in some cases to feel woozy or to even pass out. Also after birth they really want you to take it easy and running willy nilly all over dosnt exactly fit that

It is for your safety and the safety of others on the road.

My midwife said nothing about this. I totally drove myself to the grocery store the other day.

No one told me this, and I even had a cesarean. I don't drive anyway, but no one at the hospital knew that.

i could never do that! so i guess everyone shouid watch out! lol

Never heard of that. I drive/drove.

After my c/s, they told me no driving for a week, or for as long as I was on the pain pills.

They'll let me drive after a week, but no vacuuming for six weeks

Seems perfectly reasonable to me!
