I have great stuff to make for my big boy for Christmas and I need to come up with something for the baby...I was thinking this

I was thinking knit loops on the round and then wet felt in my washing machine...

do I attach them before I felt them...UGH I really want to make one

also what kind of wool?

thanks mamas

What a neat toy!!! I'm only a beginning knitter, but it looks like you'd knit short bits of round cord (I forget the name and I do not know the technique! i-cord?? The knitting people would know!) sew them into loops--you'd definitely want them connected before felting them. The regular craft stores sell all sorts of yarn meant for felting these days. Save your coupons and watch for holiday sales because if you want a lot of colors, it's going to be as much or more than just buying from the etsy seller, and you'll only need a little bit of yarn for each loop, so there would be lots extra leftover. Once your chain is done, you would put it in the washing machine on hot with a little bit of soap and let it agitate a bit. Check it regularly...it will probably only take 10 or 15 mins on hot. Let it dry flat for a couple of days. If you've got a nice sun-beam to use it dries even faster. Because of the risk of catching on parts of the washing machine, you'd probably want to put the chain in a delicates bag in the washer to protect the loops during the felting process.

(Honestly...$15 is a really good price for the amount of work. Unless you've got felt-able yarn already in the house and can churn out the knitting, I'd just get it from the etsy store!)

Oooh, I have tons of wool scraps left from soakers hanging around. That would be a perfect baby project.

I think you could do it a couple of ways. Either knit lengths of i-cord and sew them closed or knit in the round. I'd definitely have them connected before felting. I am so going to try this out.

I ran into a pattern for a felted chain a while back, and it wasn't too hard to find again.
