Bottle and Sippy cup problems in 13 month old

What is the right age you would suggest for weaning off bottle onto cup?

My 13 month old just doesn't seem ready to transition to a cup..She doesn't seem able to suck out of most sippy's..The best she has done is with a soft nuby cup..And then she will only take ice cold water...She still wants her bottle for her formula, rice milk and juice..I can't even get her to suck out of a straw...Should I be concerned?Or should I just chalk it up to her still being too young and needing nipple/suck still...She doens't breastfeed..And I know that they have the natural need to suck till they are older...They are gently trying to get me to wean her off the bottle since she moved to the toddler room a couple weeks ago at daycare..And my mom has been at me too..Says she is too old for a bottle..But too me she just doesn't seem ready to be without it...Anyone else seen this?

Thanks...

Maybe try a foogo straw thermos. Ds won't use a sippy or a regular straw but took to the foogo right away. It has a soft silicone straw that is more like a bottle nipple than most sippy nozzles.

My DD is also 13 mos. I tried to transition her to a sippy starting half-heartedly (well, probably less than half) at 10 mos. and started in more earnest at 12.5 mos. I was a little concerned that she didn't cotton to the sippies very quickly. A wise mama at an LLL meeting counseled patience. Like you, I have experiemented with different brands and so far the munchkin soft spot is her fave. the first years ones are also good. i took the things out so they spill more but are also easier to suck. i would like for her to wean off bottle but i am accepting it will be a slow process. daycare is helping in that when the big kids get their sippy cups she wants hers too.

what about a "normal" cup - ir. one without a lid. Yes there will be initial mess but they learn quickly!

I would try a straw cup. DD nursed till she was 1 and then took a bottle till about 15 months.. She wanted nothing to do with regular sippys.

I weened my son off the bottle between 7-9 months using the Gerber NUK sippy cups. The spout is made from the almost the same material as the nipples are. They are on the pricey side, and kind of hard to find, but it worked beatifully.

He was a breastfed baby, and when I moved to bottles the only type he'd take was the NUK bottles then when he got to about 7 months he couldn't feed fast enough off of the 0+ nipples, but would just spit the formula everywhere if I used the 6month+ nipples so I tried the NUK sippy cups, and haven't had a problem since. At a year I moved him to regular hard sippy cups, but we still have problems with regular cups and straws. I can't for the life of my get him to drink through a straw, he just takes the straw out of the cup,and whips it around so the water or juice goes everywhere.

On the other hand I wouldn't worry about my 19 month old nephew still drinks almost exclusively out of the bottle, and I took a bottle until I was like 2 and a half because I was very stubborn about it. I wanted that bottle and that's all there was to it. I have no idea how my mom got me off the bottle, but I remember drinking out of them for a long time.

Also, kind of a side note, after I put my son exclusively on sippy cups, even the NUK ones he started sucking his thumb. Never did it before then.

I would tell the daycare to back off. My daughter used a bottle until she was about 2, and when she was done with it, she was done with it. It was easy. She never took to a sippy cup.

My daughter went to daycare when she was 14 months old, and she quit her daytime bottle then because she saw none of the other kids were drinking out of a bottle. This could happen to your child as well. I wouldn't worry about forcing her to do something she doesn't want to.

My 2 year old weaned at 14 months but LOVED her warm soy/rice milk ba-ba. She just mailed it to a baby this week. I didn't care what anyone said its my kid and it was something she really needed/loved.

We use the born free sippy cup it has a long soft spout and an insert that mimics sucking and is supposedly better for their palate. We also use regular glasses for her.

At 8 months I switched my son to Born Free sippy cups when I learned about BPA. He did nurse at home, but the transition at day care was easy. We had tried other sippy cups with him, but he had zero interest. At 22 months he is only interested in drinking from a cup.
