I am planning on making chilli tonight for dinner in the crock pot.
I have never used dried beans before but thought I would give it a go.
I rinsed them and put them in a bowl of cold water last night around 11:00.
I changed the water this morning and they are still hard. What do I do now?
Did I do something wrong? They are red kidney beans BTW.
TIA
Krista

you're fine...they're still supposed to be hard. Go ahead and put them in the crockpot and cook per your recipe. It'll be delicious!

Yup, supposed to be hard! They'll soften up after you cook them.

A few tips:
- Don't add your tomato sauces until after the beans are cooked. It will REALLY slow down cooking time.

- Kidney beans can make you sick if they are undercooked. Make sure you cook them well.

To add to that:

Put them in your crockpot with water only until they're cooked.

Tomato products and sweeteners slow down the cooking time.

Normally, you soak overnight and the next day cook them with water and salt on the stove top for 30 to 90 minutes or until they're soft. Then use them as you would out of the can.

If using the slowcooker, I normally just put them in early in the morning with water and salt. Then once they're cooked I'll add whatever I need to make the recipe I'm cooking.

I havent used a crockpot but i found a great way to cook beans when i forgot to soak them overnight, put them in a pot with extra water, bring to a rapid boil for 5 minutes, turn off the heat and put the lid on, leave for one and a half hours. then bring up to a simmer/ gently boil again till cooked. If making chili towards thend when they are starting to get soft add a finley chopped onion, chilli spice, salt, pepper, butter etc, mmnnnnn.

do NOT add salt until they are done cooking. Salt will slow the process down, not saying that it won't work, but you want to add salt at the end
