Son's school is offering Flu Mist

My son is in kindergarten at our public elementary school and they are offering FluMist next week to those who want to purchase it. He is totally vax free and I was wondering if it is safe for him to be around a lot of children recieving the vaccine that day?

Personally, I'd keep him home for a day or two. FluMist is a live virus vaccine.

FluMist in this age group (in the range of 80%), and persisted in some vaccinees for at least 21 days
So if you really wanted to protect your child from flu vaccine shedding, it'd have to be a heck of a lot more than a day or two, unfortunately. I also read a live vaccine insert recently that said it was not known how long it shed for. Nice.

I would also be concerned about my child 'accidentally' getting the vaccine, so it wouldn't be a bad idea just to keep him home on that day.

Does anyone else find it ironic that schools are so quick to administer vaccines (which are not OTC pharmaceutical products!) yet these days a kid has to go to a nurse and get approval to have an aspirin??

Doesn't it shed for about 2-3 weeks though?

Okay...so you think I should really keep him home for a couple of days AT LEAST? Wow...I wish this was being done on a Friday! He only goes half days, and I really don't know if I can keep him home more than a day or two (he already missed a few days a month ago with a stomach virus). Is there something I can do to pump up his immune system...I already give him a multi, 500mg of Vit. C, Probiotic (when I think about it). What about elderberry (?) or anything else to give him extra protection.
He is horrible about putting his fingers in his mouth so he needs all the protection he can get!

I was concerned about him "accidently" getting FluMist but they do charge $25 and there is paper work you have to fill out and turn in...so I thought that in this case, it was not all too probable.
Thanks for your help!

Ya know what really gets me is schools are so particular about things like tylenol and any other medication. But this they'll hand out like candy : ETA oops i just read the rest of ophelia's post I was thinking the same thing and in a hurry to post.
What about good cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil? No sugar, no juice, limit grains, etc...I really like the traditional foods diet, our family has never been healthier.

I am very concerned about this as well. My dd's kindergarten (it's an elementary school) sent a flyer today about administering the FluMist.. they are offering it "free!!" and for 5 days!! ::Should I keep her home the whole days 5 + some? Will I get "in trouble" from the school for keeping her home that long? We are also going on vacation in Dec, so she will miss a week there too
What should I do ladies?

Keep her home next week.

Call her school and tell 'em she has the flu. They certainly wouldn't want her there, sharing her nasty flu germs that are sure to be floating around her...............

You can be sure that if you send her, and it is free, they will administer it to her.

Really, keep her home. Good grief, she'd in kindergarten. It's not like she's going to miss any important studies or tests!

I believe it, but I can't believe this.
I know of 'shot clinics' before the school year starts, but wow, didn't imagine during the school year.

If you can keep them home, do it.
Does anyone know if the homeopathic oscillium remedy or a hyland's cold tablet would do anything to help keep someone from getting the flu? I thought I'd heard about a preventative homeopathic remedy you took daily? (or I imagined it )

One of the threads on here today said Vit D helps prevent the Flu.
Something on Mercola's website.

NAK to sleep or I'd google.

They did this last year and are doing it again this year and its both the shot and the nasal spray.I figured that since we live on an island it would be very hard to avoid contact.I coached him on what to say if he was offered a shot since they had it spaced out over several days.I was ready to keep him home though. They didn't have a refusal form only an acceptance form.He never got the flu.

They don't have a refusal form on our paperwork either, but they do have a "staff only" box that gives choices for why consent was forgotten :
