Teach me about dumpster diving! - Page 3

Bumping to say that my mom got a nearly brand new looking bike rack for her car while DDing yesterday! She looked it up online and it costs $85 new. She just got a new bike for her birthday a few days ago, so the timing was so perfect.

I love to walk around the morning of trash day, I have found many treasures that way: curtains, a coffee table, a (crappyish) pullout couch, the pants I'm wearing right now and more.

A couple of months ago I found the motherload in a dumpster. There must have been at least a dozen trashbags full of barely used (and some new with tags!) brand name clothes. Most of them didn't fit me, which was a blessing in disguise, and I'm still finding homes and trying to sell some of them. Now why all that stuff ended up in a dumpster beats me!

You should of seen how pi$$ed off I was when my boss told me that!!!! I was trying to buy a slightly damaged winter coat to fix and take to the local thrift store since it was winter : and they can always use a good coat, especially in plus sizes. All that was freaking wrong with it was that the pocket needed to be sewed back up, and it needed to be washed because a customer got some dirt on it. Well, when I told my boss what I was going to do (not knowing the policy on donating), thinking I was doing something good. She was like "sure you can ....... if you want to lose your job."::

What, are the donation center police going to arrest me?!!! To make things worse, they were having us sell those fundraising bracelets. What did the charity do? Give winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarfs to kids in need. Talk about messed up double standards.

I'm not comfortable going dumpster diving after dark. Do any of you go during the middle of the day or early evening?

We've gone in the early evening, depending on the location, if it is somewhat secluded or not a busy area. I don't like drawing attention from random people...you get the weird looks sometimes, and if a business owner or employee actually saw they might make you leave (versus at night, when no one will know you're there unless it is the overnight crew). We mostly go at night, and my DH comes along. He's big and scary looking to most people, so he's a good safety precaution.

OMG... That is incredibly infuriating. Godforbid a person in need gets a coat they were going to throw away anyway...AGH.

And even if you didn't have a place to donate it to, or it was damaged beyond repair, the material could at least be recycled...I've been collecting fabric scraps or clothes beyond repair to cut into strips for braided rugs. They're so easy to make, and it is a great way to recycle a large amount of fabric.
