Idea on Rollover Minutes on Cell Phone Plans. . .

My daughter has life-threatening food allergies and asthma. A cell phone is a must, so I cancelled our landline and just have a cell phone.

Our carrier offers 450 minute plans and 900 minute plans. My actual usage is about 600 minutes, necessitating the 900 minute plan, but making it excessive. We can rollover our minutes and have a lot banked.

Has anyone tried downgrading their plan to use up their rollover minutes, and then upgrading once they have used all their rollover minutes and need the higher-minute plan?

A different carrier had told me that if I was planning a vacation to a spot where I would be using roaming minutes then I could upgrade my plan for that one month and then downgrade my plan once I returned.

Thoughts? The savings potential is huge . . .

I checked into this once with Cingular (now AT&T). At that time, I was told if I downgraded my plan, my rollover minutes would reset to zero.

I'm on a plan I signed up for years ago - we have tons of rollover minutes and really don't need such a big plan, but because of the way the rate structures have changed, dropping a mere $10 monthly would pretty much cut my minutes in half. So we, too, are kind of stuck having too many minutes!

double check on the rollover minutes when you downgrade. with my carrier when you downgrade you lose all but whatever plan you are going to with your rollover.

for example you have a 900 plan and have 1000 rollover minutes, if you downgrade down to 450 you only get to keep 450 of your rollover minutes.

thats who i am with att, and you dont lose all, but just to the amount you are downgrading. it is not worth the $10 month to lose my 1500 rollover minutes. although we are with a 1200 plan and the next one down is I think 700 minutes, i we hover right around 700 so I am afraid of going over one month and having a huge bill. so we stick with what we have.
