teachma - I think it is really hard for people who were always skinny. I was always obese so gaining some weight doesn't really bother me. I have a friend who is beautiful and 6 month pregnant and she feels bad about her weight gain. But she looks so good. It really all depends on your frame of mind.

In exciting news - I am going permanent which means I get 97% of my current salary for a year of my mat leave and a job to come back to! I'm so relieved.

JoyFilled--:::: That is awesome!!! I'm sure you're right about the weight thing. I've always been a little overweight and it pleases me to be gaining weight with a purpose and not just because I'm getting fatter .

Holy cow-- that's unheard of! Where do you live, and in what industry are you employed?

As a teacher, I will have 60 days' paid maternity leave, which should take me from the beginning-ish of April, actually through much of September. During that time, I will be using up my "sick days," and thus, will continue to receive insurance coverage for the whole family. However, if I want to extend my leave (and I do-- through December) it will be unpaid and my insurance will cost me the Cobra payment of $1800/month for Oct, Nov, and Dec.

You know, even with 12 lbs weight gain, I still weigh only 130 (I'm 5'5"). And I am eating less now that the nausea is subsiding (dare I acknowledge feeling a little better?). So I do think I will start to taper off with the gain. I just hope I am not past + 16 pounds at my 16 week visit. As longs as the pounds don't pass the weeks, I'm okay with that (in the abstract sense). Mirror-wise, it's a slightly different story.

MI Dawn, congrats on the exciting dr's visit!!

I am naturally very thin, I don't have a problem gaining weight during pg. Well, with DD1 I did but I also was working 12 hour shifts on my feet all day. I'm ok with the weight gain, but it helps if I don't step on the scale often. I didn't weigh myself last pg except once or twice when I got curious, I think I gained under 30 lbs, but I really don't know. I do know women that step on the scale at the MW/OB office and cover their eyes, it helps their piece of mind not to know. I got curious last week only to discover that at 11 weeks, I had gained 7 lbs already, I might not step back on again.

Oh, no. I don't cover my eyes. But I *do* remove my shoes. And socks. And sweater...

I'm up in Canada - so we automatically get 55% of our salary or 440 a week for a whole year which ever is lower. It is part of our employment insurance. But I work for our territorial government and if they made me permanent then they would increase that base amount to 97% of my salary for the year. The first 17 weeks are just for me and then the other 35 weeks can be split between DH and I as we want.

(Yes everyone should move to Canada.)

That is incredible! I only get 55% of my salary for my year of maternity leave.

Congrats MI Dawn!

My eight year old really, really wants to move to Canada...if McCain becomes our next president! He tried to make me go online and purchase plane tickets "just incase." But now there's another appealing reason to make that move...

I'm in Canada, too, but I'm not working so no sweet mat leave this time around. With both of my other mat leaves, my work topped up my $440/wk from employment insurance to 85% of my regular income for the first 15 weeks. After that it was just the $440/wk, which is still not bad considering that my job was waiting for me after a year. I do get 4mos of full paid mat leave from my federal scholarship (if I get it again), though, which isn't too bad particularly since dh will then get to take up to 35 weeks of parental leave at 80 or 85% of his regular income (he's a teacher).

Some places are a little screwy, though. My friend worked at a law office for a while where they would give her 100% of her regular income for 6mos if she promised to return then. Otherwise (ie. if she decided to take the whole year), they gave her nothing more and she only got her employment insurance.

I can't believe how sick I still feel. I'm almost 13 weeks and I still feel like total crap. I feel like I am never going to feel good again. My sickness was gone completely by 12 weeks with my first, by 11 weeks with my second. I've been way, way more sick this time around and it doesn't seem to be letting up at all. I forgot to take my morning Diclectin pill Monday and although mornings have been my best time of day, I couldn't stop vomitting. I'm done with all of the sickness stuff! I just want to feel normal again!

On the plus side, I have managed to gain about 8-10lbs, which is good considering I was underweight to begin with.

How are you guys feeling?

Oh, and happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians this weekend. Any fun plans? We're off to Vancouver Island to my inlaws.

The weirdest thing happened to me today. I was at work and I hopped on the old scale we have there (one of the kind where you slide the things back and forth on the bar) and it said I'd lost 2.5 lbs since yesterday or monday. ??? I haven't had a bit of morning sickness the whole pregnancy, so I'm not throwing it up. I have been hungrier the last few days (now at 15 weeks). I'm worried I'm not eating enough. Ugh. Anyway, maybe it's just the old scale being wonky. Anyone else ever loose weight out of the blue while pg?

I haven't lost weight, but I'm only up 2 pounds since conception. I was actually a little worried this morning, but I am getting bigger and I did hear the baby's HB about 2 weeks ago, so I know everything is fine. It's just weird; I think I'd gained at least 8 pounds by this time with my first pregnancy, though I guess I did have about 10 extra pounds left over.

Hooray for all of the happy news, MI Dawn and Joyfilled.

It's supposed to snow on Saturday!!! And this is three weeks later than our normal first snow (we usually get it about the second week in September).

I dread winter...mostly the wind and the brown-ness of everything, but I don't mind it so much this year...knowing what will be waiting to bloom in April! :

I still can't believe it supposed to snow though...shesh!

I've lost a little weight recently too. I am not sure what the deal is. I was underweight to start this pregnancy, and I have been TRYING to gain. I was up seven pounds, but now I've lost two.

I could definitely live of the fatta the land for awhile, myself...I'm more worried about the baby. Maybe I'll stop being so damn healthy and eat something fattening .
Good fats are good! Avodcado, coconut or olive oil, olives, whole milk yogurt, nuts.... eat 'em up!!
dehydration can cause a 2 lb weight difference in a day.

I'm down slightly in weight too - I'm pretty happy where I am now, except I'm always hungry (and I always eat). so who knows.
I'm losing... I gained at the beginning, but now I'm sliding down again, I've lost about 5 lbs. I've only thrown up a few times, but the nausea makes it so hard to eat enough for three (me, baby, and my almost exclusively breastfed 6 month old). For some reason I've felt much worse this past week.

On the plus side, we saw the midwife last Monday, and baby is very active, heartbeat is great, and growth is right on schedule. And I didn't have ketones, which I had lots of times last pregnancy, so I guess at least Monday I wasn't doing too bad as far as calories.

Also on the plus side, I made cheesecake yesterday, and we've got 1/4 of it left in the fridge (dinner guests took care of most of it), so I've got tasty appealing high protein food in the fridge for today! I grew my last baby on red vines and sprite (during morning sickness only!) and he turned out fine, so why not cheesecake?
gnatty---oh cheesecake!!!!! I have to have one of those this weekend....guess I'll just throw out the chocolate cake I had to have last weekend and could only stand one piece of!! LOL

I am going to pipe in on everything in one shot...lol

Nausea I think it subsides and then I have a yucky day, lucky for me, I haven't thrown up though some days I think I would feel better if I did! 13 weeks yesterday so maybe maybe the feel better days are coming!

I am soooo jealous of all you all in Canada!!! A year of maternity leave, with pay coming in?? I am getting 8 weeks, and I get my commission, but that's it. BUT, my boss is letting me work from home 3 days a week, so I only have to go in 2 days after the 8 weeks, so I am not complaining about that, since the first 2 times it was right back at it. How about other working moms in US, what does it look like for you?

Weight gain, 3 pounds here, but none of my pants or shirts fit. Boobs are killing the shirts. Baby bump is working on the pants! I'm feeling ok about it so far, but I really want to keep it under control so I don't gain so much that it's hard to lose even when I am nursing. I was overweight about 5 years ago and lost over 60 pounds and I don't want to go there again! It was just too hard to lose it, so I am a bit scared of that, but it is ok when I think about the gift growing for us for April!!

Sending : to all!!!

I run my own tech business from home. Sometime I go to clients, but I'm going to make my husband work from home those days if it comes to that. He's in the tech industry, too, so working from home is very popular.

I started this business with the whole kid thing in mind, since I'm not interested in day care. So for the past three years, I have been slowly building my business so that I have a flexible schedule.

We'll see what happens in reality...
