WIC meeting tomorrow- need MI vax exemption form??

Hi

I've gone through some of the archives here to read up on WIC and the fact that we're not caught up on vaccines. I have an appt tomorrow morning.

The only shots we're not caught up on is the chicken pox one. (DH insists on the kids getting them. But, he lets that one slide.) So, it seems funny that I have a philisophical or religious problem with just one shot and not all the rest...

On past threads I've read, some give the advice to "show your exemption form".

Some say just tell the WIC worker that you don't vax.

Where do I get this form, just in case? And is it something I can have filled out before tomorrow morning? LOL

I'm confused, I guess- is it a different form from the school exemption form? We homeschool, so I've never had to do that either.

The last time I went to a wic appointment, and they asked me for his shot records I just told them that I don't vaccinate and they gave me a dirty look, but that was it. They printed my checks and I was on my way.

Thanks!

well, that's what I'm hoping for (minus the dirty look would be alot to ask for, I'm sure ), but I wanted to be informed and possibly ready with a form, if they insist on it.

It seems like MI can be really picky.

I guess I'm clueless about what I might need: exemption forms, exemption letter, notarization, do I get it from the Health Dept, do I get it from a anti-vax website, consent forms, etc etc

I know anyone who has asked for an excempt form I told them to give me their fax number, and I would have my son's doctors office fax it to them.
I think that the first time I went to wic and told them I dont vax they asked if I had filled out an exempt and had it with me. I told them that I filled one out at his doctors office, but didnt have a copy. They never said anything else, and I got my checks. The second time I just got the dirty look, and then got my checks.

I would ask them for the law that states you have to have an exemption form. If they can't provide it, talk to the supervisor. You want the law as it pertains to vaccines in writing. I bet they'll back right down.

There is no law.

You don't need an exemption.

WIC Eligibility & Vax
"Immunization records and/or an infant/child’s immunization status are in no way tied to the receipt of WIC benefits. "

And I'd insist on not vaccinating. Start your vax research from the top--together. He should know the answer to each of these questions for each VAD. Table all vaccines until you are finished with this task; it should take awhile.

1. Name of the disease
2. Description of the disease
3. Length of time from initial infection to end of all symptoms
4. Infectious period
5. Normal symptoms of the disease
6. Known serious consequences of the disease
7. Proportion of persons infected developing serious consequences
8. Transmission route of the disease
9. Prevalence of the disease
10. Treatments of the disease and efficacy of those treatments
11. Relevant research about the disease
12. Name of the vaccine
13. Company that makes the vaccine
14. Contents of the vaccine
14A. The significance of whether or not the vaccine is live
15. History of development of the vaccine
16. Known side-effects of the vaccine and rate of incidence of those side-effects
17. Possible side-effects not yet acknowledged by the vaccine maker
18. Relevant research into the vaccine
19. How effective is the vaccine at preventing the disease?
20.What is the vaccine meant to do? (Many vaccines are not meant to prevent infection or transmission).
21.Number of cases reported each year.
22.Number of deaths reported each year from the vaccine and natural disease.

thanks, ladies for all the info!

Emmeline- I researched all about vaccines and learned so much while pregnant with child #3 (we have 5 kids). DH will have nothing to do with opting out of vaccines. I got very sick of arguing with him and the pediatrician.

And, then, with my last pregnancy, I spent the entire time researching and fighting my way to a VBAC. I was successful- I had a VBAC after 4 c-sections!! woo hoo! But, it was a daily (internal) battle and a montly/weekly battle with the docs- I did so much reading/researching into homebirth, unassisted birth, vbacing, etc, that I had no energy left to battle immunizations!

We have compromised by me scheduling which vaccines we get, when. I spread them out- I refuse to have more than 3 in one day! And, we're waiting on the chicken pox one for my 5 year old DS and 2 year old. But, unfortunately, we haven't caught the pox yet, even though we've been exposed. :

It seems silly to fight now, since my 2 year old has almost all her shots. But, we don't do the flu shot and never have. And, I'm not about to do that teenage girl vax- the one that my pediatrician is already informing me all about, even though my daughter is only 8.

Oh, btw, my WIC appt went fine. She just commented on how DD needed a couple shots yet, but that I could get them at my convenience. I said, "o.k." and we went on to the next thing.

Yeah, that was about what happened with me but since I stated that I dont vax I also got a dirty look. I knew you shouldnt of had a huge problem.
