6wks postpartum, can I use tampons?

Thread Starter
I posted yesterday that I had my 6wk postpartum checkup. I had stopped bleeding a little over a week ago (and the last week of it was just spotting). A few hours after my exam and pap, I started bleeding quite a bit again, like as much as I was the 2nd week postpartum. This morning I checked with the dr and they said it could be my period starting or more postpartum bleeding and it was fine as long as I'm not soaking a pad in an hour or having other symptoms (fever, dizzy etc). It has been going for about a day now and is not getting any lighter.
With my first child, AF did not return till 9mo. My DD is nursing about every 3 hours during the day and 4-5 hours at night. She nurses much quicker than my son did though (she takes about 15 min, he took more like 45 min at this age).
Anyway, so I know there is a chance it's not AF but just more postpartum bleeding. In light of that, I'm wondering if I can use tampons. The only reason I'm hesitant is that the information I had said not to use tampons for postpartum bleeding. At my checkup he said everything had healed (2nd degree tear) and looked fine.
So my questions are: is this more likely AF or more postpartum bleeding? can I use tampons since it's possible that it's still postpartum bleeding.

Thanks!

I'm guessing it's more postpartum bleeding, but it's not unheard of for AF to come so early. Still, since it took 9 months last time that doesn't seem too likely. You *can* use tampons if you really want. They may not be comfortable yet - or even stay in very well yet. I'd say give it a shot if you want, but be prepared to use pads as a backup.

I don't know....if your bleeding pretty heavily i've heard there is an increased risk of toxic shock syndrome. I was always told to go back to tampons on your 2nd pp period. hth!

Hi, i would use pads for the first few months and give your inside time to heal really well... and to be sure this is your period and not more pp bleeding.

What has your doctor said? maybe hive her/him a call.
