Yarn Suggestions for LTK Lucy Hat

hey all, I haven't knit anything in ages (i've been playing with the sewing machine more), but I really want to make my 3 yo dd a Lucy Hat. But being 3, I figure the odds of the hat disappearing at some point make me hesitant to spend a ton of money on yarn for it. I'd love it to be something I could buy locally, which at this point means Michael's, Joann, etc (both my LYS have closed ). The gauge is 16st in 4" of pattern stitch on #7 needles. The suggested yarns are LTK 2ply or knit picks decadence (which seems to be discontinued. She says it needs to be a heavy worsted weight...any soft but relatively inexpensive (say less than $8-10/skein) suggestions?

I would go with a cotton. or even just pattons wool (available at micheals)

I'm nearly finished with one for my nearly 3 yo; I used some Peace Fleece from my stash, but I was going to knit one for my 10 yo next, probably from a chain store like you mentioned, so I am curious what suggestions you get.

Woops, somehow I lost this thread. Would patton's be considered a "heavy" worsted?

Any other suggestions?
