Top doc backs picking your nose and eating it

Picking your nose and eating it is one of the best ways to stay healthy, according to a top Austrian doctor.

Innsbruck-based lung specialist Prof Dr Friedrich Bischinger said people who pick their noses with their fingers were healthy, happier and probably better in tune with their bodies.

He says society should adopt a new approach to nose-picking and encourage children to take it up.

Dr Bischinger said: "With the finger you can get to places you just can't reach with a handkerchief, keeping your nose far cleaner.

"And eating the dry remains of what you pull out is a great way of strengthening the body's immune system.

"Medically it makes great sense and is a perfectly natural thing to do. In terms of the immune system the nose is a filter in which a great deal of bacteria are collected, and when this mixture arrives in the intestines it works just like a medicine.

"Modern medicine is constantly trying to do the same thing through far more complicated methods, people who pick their nose and eat it get a natural boost to their immune system for free."

He pointed out that children happily pick their noses, yet by the time they have become adults they have stopped under pressure from a society that has branded it disgusting and anti social.

He said: "I would recommend a new approach where children are encouraged to pick their nose. It is a completely natural response and medically a good idea as well."

And he pointed out that if anyone was really worried about what their neighbour was thinking, they could still enjoy picking their nose in private if they still wanted to get the benefits it offered.

I'm crossed between laughing, being grossed out, and thinking it's kinda cool.

Two stories:

First, my grandmother had a terrible infection in her finger. A doctor took some of the pus, processed it in some way, then had her take it by mouth. The infection quickly cleared.

Second, many years later I kept having infections down under (y'all know where). I remembered the story about my grandmother and proceeded to ingest, by mouth, a small amount of the discharge. The infection cleared right up. I've used this technique several times with great results. Gross. Disgusting. But it works and it beats going to the doctor and taking drugs, which usually don't work well for me anyway.

On the booger thing, most people have a certain amount of post-nasal drip which goes down the throat anyway, so I'm not sure that skipping the nose-picking undermines the immune activity all that much. Unless it has to go into the mouth to activate something?

Maybe it's the activation of the gross factor that makes it all work! :

No wonder I'm so healthy... :

That's good news!! My two boys should make it through the winter with minimal illness

Then why is my nose picking and eating son the one to always get sick? He's the least healthiest out of all of us. I don't think this works for my family.

OMG. This is the sickest (yet coolest) thread I've ever read on this board

I'm not about to stick my fingers in dark places with ooozy discharge and stick it in my mouth....but it was a good (in a sick way) read.

Really? So this means that someone has actually picked a booger and studied it under microscope and stuff? Has an actual study with many people been conducted? How many a day do you have to eat to stay healthy? Can you imagine signing up for that medical study you are supervised during your nose mining activities in case you have a huge one and someone else has none.

Seriously though.... it reminded me of another pre-vaccine medicine from ? , but to become immune to chicken pox (i think) you could either eat someones scabs or they could also be powdered with mortar/pestel and then snorted. Oh no, what if you ate those boogers?

Please excuse the delirious ramble above as I am in an O2 deprived state thanks to the sea on my forehead.

Apparently my three-year-old was apprised of the research some time ago.

I'll have her send a copy of the article to her grandmother.

The moral of the story...don't be too picky...

LOL, I love your line of reasoning. What's funny to me, is there's plenty of people who would be totally grossed out by this but wouldnt give a second thought to stuff like this being injected into them as a vaccine. This talks about the history of vaccines a bit, and mentions the ground pus and snorting thing, somehow that seems better then todays method of mixing it with aluminum, although I still don't think I'd want to do it. http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/A...es_how_why.php

Maybe the powdered-chicken-pox-scab boogers would protect you from shingles!

My son's preschool teacher told me about this a few years ago when I was trying to pry the finger out of his nose.. guess she was right!

I have to honestly say, considering what sex actually involves, anyone who has ever been physically intimate with another human being has no business talking about gross. And then there is menstruation. And childbirth. And the simple fact that everything we eat is covered with bacteria and dirt.

Life is gross. We just pretend that we've got it all cleaned up and deoderized, but folks, we are down here in the physical world and it is messy and dirty and filled with disease and suffering and cruelty and...well there is also amazing beauty and creativity and kindness. But just don't ever try to fool yourself that you are managing to put stuff into your mouth that is clean and germ-free. Honest.

:Puke
Regardless of how much bacteria we eat or how dirty we really are, I can't help but want to puke at the idea. I don't drink my urine, I don't take a spoon to my poop or slurp my menses-- what comes out of my body stays out!

It is an interesting concept though (the boogers not anything else!)

Mmm, Mmm! There isn't anything more fulfilling than hooking that crunchy edge, then pulling out this gooey mass where it feels like you've emptied half your sinus cavity. Ahhhhh, what a relief!

The crunchy part is OK, but I think true connoisseur's like some of the chewy nougat as well.
