Website technical question

Not sure if this is where to put a technical computer question or not. Here goes:

I bought a domain name the other day and am slowly weeding my way through html. I can get a background, title, and a bit of text on the index.html page. I am trying to create a second page and for some reason cannot get it worked out right. I put an internal link on the index page linking to a page I called about.html on that page I put the same background and title but I cannot get the page to load. I even went and changed the html to exactly what is on the index page and it still does not come up. It says something along the line of: oops you screwed up here are three things to check 1. you don't know what you are doing 2. you are not connected to the internet 3. refresh your browser. um its not 2 and 3 so I don't know what I am doing. In the (is this right) FTP (??) I uploaded the file from a notebook and renamed it about.html it was about.txt

Anyone have any idea what I am talking about?

If you would like to send me more information including the files I would be glad to see if I can help you fix it.

yeah, having the files would help. My first step to diagnosis would be to make the link to the "about" page like href="http://www.yourdomain.com/about.html" so you can see of it's just your syntax in the internal link that's off. make sure your capitalization is consistent, there are no hidden spaces... Make sure the about and index files are actually where you think they are...
