Waterville is about 35 min N of me; my youngest was born at Inland Hospital, when there were still midwives practicing there.

I hated Inland when I had my girls there.

Maine General is now the place to go. The midwives practice there, I'm going there in hopes of a VBAC since they're VBAC friendly, and they're baby friendly too! Woo hoo!

Glad to know there are Maine mamas here! Hopefully there are more too!

It's changed so much since '05 - my midwife left shortly after my son's birth. I've talked to the nurse manager there and she told me that their Cesarean birth rate skyrocketed from just under/around 15% to over 30% in the year or so after the midwives left... I need to get up to see Maine Gen now that the kids are back in school (I teach childbirth education classes).

We went to MaineGeneral too. We felt that the travel time was well worth the fact that we could have wonderful midwives there. The local hospital didn't have any practicing midwives at the time. I am glad to say that they do now and I have had heard wonderful things about her. We liked MaineGeneral. I would have loved to do a waterbirth and that wasn't allowed but overall our experience there was pretty positive. I attribute it mostly to the amazing midwives and some very caring nurses on staff.

Cat, can I ask what you mean by a hospital being "baby friendly"? I'm just curious what would make a hospital baby-friendly (or not).

Hi!
We are in Augusta now and are hoping to hear from two job prospects, one in waterville and one in orono in the next week or two to see if dh got the job. So we will be moving to one of those areas very soon.
I know we could commute to waterville but dh likes to ride his bike to work every day, even in the winter, and hates to drive so we will move. And I just like waterville. I'm sure I will like orono too but I haven't really been there before so I don't really know yet.
