Measuring textured gauge swatches

How do you do it?

I've been avoiding the q&a portion of the masters program because it involves measuring my gauge swatches. Not a big deal with stockinette ones but ummm...I'm measuring garter ridges, a cable, etc. All things that don't really sit nice and pretty you know?

So how do I do? Once I figure this out I'm self-imposing a knitting ban til it's finished. So take your time. I'm in no hurry.

Is this a sign I shouldn't put a ban on personal knitting?

It's a sign that nobody knows the answer. WHY are you asking here and not ravelry?

you need to block them (pin them out so they'll stay flat as they can) -don't stretch it when you pin, just lay it out normally. Then, lay a flat ruler across and get to counting, same as stockinette gauge measuring. it's more difficult to count accurately, but the method for doing it is the same For cables it's easier to just see what each cable measures then go back and reference the pattern to see how many stitches are in each cable than it is to literally count the stitches all jumbled in the cable. In garter stitch, you'll see that there's sort of interlocking bumps for each ridge - you'll count either the top row of bumps or the bottom - NOT both!
