From the Toronto Public Health website:
"On October 11, 2008, mothers and babies at sites across Canada and United States will compete to set the record for the most babies breastfeeding at one time. Breastfeeding mothers and babies are invited to participate and help Toronto win the challenge. Last year Toronto placed eighth out of 222 participating sites, with 105 moms and 107 babies and toddlers.
This event is organized by Toronto Public Health and the Chinese/Vietnamese Breastfeeding Network and is part of World Breastfeeding Week in Canada. The event includes the challenge, information sessions, light lunch and door prizes. Prior registration is not required.
Why this Challenge? The Challenge reinforces the message of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme: “Mother Support: Going for the Gold!” As the Olympics slogan stated: “One World, One Dream”, World Breastfeeding Week calls for a united goal of greater support for all breastfeeding mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding. The standard is: to breastfeed infants exclusively for the first six months, and to provide appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to
two years or beyond. As every country sent its best athletes to compete at these global games, it is important to remind ourselves that a healthy young athlete can only emerge from a healthy start on life. There is no question that optimal infant and young child feeding are essential for optimal growth and development."
