: A very reputable, mainstream publication is raising awareness about maternity care :

And don't forget to take the quiz!

Thanks for this link!

A great resource and I too am delighted that CR has come out so strongly on the side of nonintervention birth is best! I loved the quiz!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

That's great!

It's great, but I'm disappointed not to see doulas mentioned on the list of "low-tech interventions".

Wow, awesome!

In my opinion, they are, although not by name. It does say "Continuous presence of a companion for the mother during labor," and that doesn't jump out and say "husband/partner" to me necessarily. While it would have been nice to have doulas mentioned by name, I still think that the above is an endorsement of that kind of support.

Thanks for posting!

I think mainstream media coverage of the ills of modern maternity care is CRUICAL in order to achieve change in American maternity care. Women need to be aware of how dangerous interventions are so they will speak up & pick care providers who truly have the best interests of mom & babe at heart & use evidence-based care. We need a cultural shift to happen for Americans to stop blindly trusting docs & just thinking "Doctor knows best." Media coverage will be instrumental in accomplishing this.

LOL, but I'm "preachin' to the choir" here, huh?

Thanks for pointing that out! I must have skipped right over that part the first time I read it.

OMG i love consumer reports!

A few months ago there was a list of the top 10 unnecessary surgery's done in the US. I was pleasantly surprised to see circumcision, c-section and episiotomies.

Their car seat info is absolutely terrible so I am REALLY glad to see an awesome article in this mainstream publication!

I like this one on the true/false (well I liked all of them....)

Epidural anesthesia presents risks to newborns.
True. Babies whose mothers received epidurals during labor are at risk for rapid heart rate, hyperbilirubinemia (the presence of an excess of bilirubin in the blood), need for antibiotics, and poorer performance on newborn assessment tests.

I was at a 'class' at the hospital before my first birth and specifically asked the anesthesiologist about risk to the baby, just to see what information he would offer. He point blank lied and told everyone in the room that there an epidural was completely safe for the baby-- he DID acknowledge risks to the mother.

Anyways, I wish I had run run run from that hospital. I ended up with an epidural too, I really didn't want it, but I didn't want a c-section either.

I know! It's crazy how easy they lie! One birth class I went to, the OB actually told us that epidurals were GOOD for babies! Insane....
