Ultrasounds - Heartbeat

Those of you that have had US that have detected a HB... how many weeks/days were you when you saw the little heart beating? My doctor does a scan weekly until the HB is detected... he says we probably won't see it until 6 weeks, but I am secretly hoping to see something next week.

I know it will ease some of my fears... of course, I also worry what if we don't see it at 6 weeks!!

With my DD I saw the heartbeat at 7w3d, but that was my first ultrasound. With this LO I will be having my scan at 7 weeks exactly.

My I ask why your doctor does scans weekly? I have early ultrasounds due to bleeding, but I can't imagine why you would need them weekly for a healthy, low risk pregancy.

I was thinking the same thing. That is a lot at the riskiest time for ultrasounds.

I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks exactly with ds.

This is when the baby is developing the fastest and is the most sensitive - weekly radiation (yes, although very small), doesn’t seem like the best idea if it is for no good reason.

my ob/gyn told me that most of europe does weekly scans, actually. (it was one of her arguments as to why its safe, saying that if there was an increased chance of miscarriage then they'd notice that if one country had a much higher rate, etc)

but I've also read they don't use as strong u/s machines, so that might make it safer.

I had an u/s at 6 weeks exactly when I had BFP last time, didn't see a heartbeat. I went back in 2 weeks and saw it.

We are going for our first u/s on Saturday, we will be 6 weeks 6 days, so I hope we see a heartbeat too!!

My doctor is doing this because I have had a miscarriage before, therefore wants to ensure things are moving ahead okay. I think I am going to hold off for my next appt. until 6 weeks... we have already verified that the pregnancy is in my uterus, so if we won't really see anything next week, would prefer to wait until the following week.

I was just thinking if there was a change that we would be able to see the HB at 5 1/2 weeks, I might go in next week. Decisions... decisions...

Sounds like a good plan. I think at 5 1/2 weeks you are very unlikely to see the heartbeat. I would hold off until at least 6 weeks. I'm not taking any chances and waiting until 7 weeks.

Good luck!

So how early can they tell if the pregnancy is in the uterus? I need to get checked out as am at risk of ectopic/tubal pregnancy but had assumed they wouldn't be able to see anything til 5 or 6 weeks? I'm calling the doc tomorrow anyway so I guess they'll tell me then what to do (I'm four weeks tomorrow). I take it an U/S is the usual way - does anyone know of anything else? (Perhaps a question that needs its own thread but I'll see what the doc says tomorrow first).

I did a lot of research on this last week. If there is a risk of a ectopic/tubal pregnancy they do an ultrasound every week until they can see where the egg has implanted. It can be as early as 4 weeks as long as 6 weeks according to what I read because they really want to be sure of what they are seeing. That being said, if the pregnancy is located outside the uterus your progesterone and hcg will be lower then expected. It is recommended to have betas done also if they cannot find out where the baby has implanted.

My US at 5wks5days showed a heartbeat of 114. Just getting started, but definately there.

I've read on the internet that you can see a heartbeat when your hCG is around 6,000, so it really depends on your hormone levels.

I've been getting betas and should be at 6,000 by tomorrow, which would be 5w5d. Again, assuming normal doubling, when I have my ultrasound at 6w3d next week I should be around 30,000.

Needless to say, I'm excited. The nurse was saying how I wouldn't see much, just a blob. "I don't care, as long as it's a blob with a flicker"

I had my u/s today at 5w5d and saw the little spot and with a flicker inside: 115bpm and measuring right on

I was very pleasantly surprised!

Miasmom/Sunup~ YIPPPEE!! So glad to hear you were able to see the heartbeat!!! ::: I have my next scan scheduled for next Thursday... I will be right at 5w4d's for my scan. I am not totally expecting to see a HB, but secretly hoping that we will see one!!!

Summerbaby~ I had a scan this week at 4w2or 3 days and we could clearly see that the development was in the uterus and we saw the tissue that would become the embryo. We also saw the corpus luteal cyst by my ovary!

We saw the HB at 6w0d, 108 bpm.
