Do you wake sleeping children to HS? - Page 2

I don't, for several reasons.

We homeschool for a reason, and that's one of them.

We unschool.

The kids are up with CariOfOz's kids and so if they are asleep at an hour where waking would be considered, there is a reason for it and they would be best to be allowed to continue. It also means that there is a little more time before my "good morning" is responded to with "i'm hungry" which is my faaavorite

My kids are sleeping on their own body ryhthms We run on an early schedule in our house. My youngest is usually konked out by 8:30 and the others by 9:00ish. We are all up by 6:00-6:30am in our house. My husband leaves out early so this has always been our schedule pretty much.

The kids have time to eat breakfast, explore outside early (they're weird, I know, lol) and watch a little t.v. or do online games before we start school. I also have some time to myself to get some stuff done and play online (like I am right now) and eat and shower. It works.

You could always get your children in bed a little bit earlier so they will get up earlier if you think they need to be up to start earlier. But if this time works for your family then I wouldn't worry about it. All families do what works best. To me that's just one benefit of homeschooling.

What does your ds think about being woken up?

My older two will sometime request a wake up call if there's something they want to do the next morning, but usually they sleep late. At some point, every evening, we have the "What's going on tomorrow?" conversation so we all know who needs to get up at what time and who needs a ride where. We also have a message board in the kitchen where we can leave each other notes (like if I take one one of the kids somewhere and others are still sleeping.)

But, I'd start by asking ds how he wants his day to look and then seeing how everyone's needs fit together.

I don't wake them, but put a lot of emphasis to the time to go upstars at night: To brush teeth, take bath/shower, read and turn the light off at 9:00 pm. If we do, they are usually up by 8am and eating yogurt. And, I'll be up early enough to plan for the day. We do have rest time for the day we have lesson in evening. It's a challenge, though.

I never wake dc unless we have something to do really early in the morning like co-op or ds has preschool. Usually ds (1 and 2) are up before 6:30, dd sleeps in a bit longer because at night she stays up a bit later doing her choir practice for me, reading to me, having me read to her and going over her spelling words that are on her wall. I try to get her to bed earlier, but we enjoy the one on one time at night when her brothers are crashed. To be honest we dont have a set schedule, and if she does sleep in somedays I just figure she is tired and she can make up her work throughout the day.

Who are these children who sleep past sunrise? Mine are normally up before me. On the rare occassion I am up first they wake up about 20 minutes later.

That said, I have not waken them but I have opened blinds to get the process moving when we have somewhere to be.

No, not unless we have a group thing scheduled.

To be fair I don't usually have to. I like to start around 9am and both kids are almost always up by then, and if they aren't it's usually for a reason (ill, we were all up late, etc). If someone started consistently sleeping late I'd have to see how much it disrupted the family's day. If it wasn't disruptive and I could work with it, I don't see any reason not to.

I am in the fortunate position of being able to allow my kids to follow their own waking cues. Most of the time I'm glad to do so.

We only wake up to an alarm for a really good class or something special. Otherwise, we all sleep in until we wake up. But we are night people. It's not all that unusual for my kids to be up until 11:00 and sometimes we do school in bed.

They are older. Wait a bit To be fair, though, my children have never been early risers - but with the onset of adolescense, DS is taking it to new heights.

My kids get up on their own at a reasonable time.

BUT if sleeping late became a habitual thing (once and awhile for catch up I am all about) then I would do a few things. First I would take a look at bed time and make sure it wasn't too late. Second I would look at how days look, maybe they are too busy and my child was just too worn out and third I would consider a medical issue if I had a child who regularly need to sleep from 9pm-1030 am or some such thing.

I think there is nothing wrong with a reasonable wake up time as a day to day habit. It's a little "real world" practice. I don't get to un-work my income and my employer expects me up and at work at a certain time. No harm in a child learning that lesson in a gentle manner early on.

ETA: not that I think that has to be true for every single child in every single family. Just my personal philosophy that works well with my kids

My mom was one who always woke us up by 9 a.m. Personally, I am anxiously awaiting the teen years when my kids want to do nothing but sleep! I'm considering their payback for all the years they've had me up before 6 a.m., and I will totally be taking advantage of it!

And, after being woken up five times in five hours last night by my nine month old, I'm sitting here asking, who are all these silly mothers who want to wake their sleeping children?

never, ever in a million years! I LOVE my sleep OR my quiet mornings and kids that wake up refreshed on their own time.

I only wake up kids for field trips!

Our schedules made it necessary for dd to get up early when she was too young to be left at home alone. Now that she is older, I could let her sleep later (and do when she's been up late) but she prefers to be up with us which is early. I love those days we get going early, have a nice horseback ride, do some academic stuff, sit down for lunch and then have the rest of the day to dive into whatever (or nothing).
