Cryptozoology, Anyone?

My 5-year-old has become a fan of the show Destination Truth. On the show, they go all over the world searching for mythical creatures (like the Loch Ness monster), and sometimes spirits. He loves pretending to do that stuff around the house, and says he wants to be a cryptozoologist when he grows up. I know this is just a phase, but I was hoping that someone might have a few suggestions of fun books or activities that tie in to this. We're not structured by any means, I just think he'd enjoy being able to explore this a little.

So, any suggestions for books or materials having to do with cryptozoology for a newly-turned 5-year-old?

I absolutely love crypto and that show! James M. Deem writes books on the paranormal and cryptozoology for kids. I was obsessed with them as a kid, and even wrote him a letter. He wrote a personal letter back and I still have it in my scrapbook. I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Oh my god! I had that How to Find a Ghost book when I was a kid! I had forgotten all about that! What a riot. I guess I was into this stuff even when I was little, though I apparently forgot all about it.

My DD was into Cyptozoology for quite awhile! She really like the book Tales of the Cryptid along with Monster Spotters. She was really into Monsterquest and Ghost Hunters too, although you might want to check them out in advance for a 5yo (especially Ghost Hunters-they have some scary stuff!).

You might also want to check out Loren Colemans website for both info and book lists.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, everyone! I've got some great things to try out.

And yes, we watch Ghost Hunters, too. I like that the hosts always reassure the home owners that ghosts are just like people, that they're not there to hurt you, etc. I really want my kids to be imaginative and open to all sorts of things, which is one of the reasons I like that they're interested in things like Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth.

That's awesome! I want to get those books for my DS when he's a little older...or maybe sooner, for me to re-read!

We watch Ghost Hunters, as well...and DS when on his first ghost hunt/tour when he was about 9 months, LOL. His mommy is just a little addicted...

I think it is so great that you're letting him explore things like this.
