My kids are 11 and 7 and are probably right on track either everything except for math....really, just math. We are very relaxed homeschoolers (maybe unschoolers I don't know) but I do wish they were better at math. Math is the only thing they are "behind" in.

I have YET to find a math program that we life and even want to do (tried Saxon and Singapore) what should be try??
I have heard good things about MathUSee and Teaching Textbooks.

We play a lot of math type games around here, play with flashcards, and do word problems and mental math. Plus we cook, make things, measure, etc.

Sounds like a great solution. It seems as though many kids are able to read/spell long before they can keep up the pace with writing. I'd like to share a great tip I read on another forum. My daughter dictates answers to me, which I write in yellow highlighter, and then she traces over them. I figure it is good practice for her, since I'm not asking her to do any formal handwriting practice right now.

I really like Math - U - See. It has worked well with my 9 year old son who doesn't enjoy math, my almost 7 year old daughter who doesn't mind it, and now my little 4 year old is learning math so easily with Math U See blocks.

Just wanted to give a recommendation for them. It is pricey but with having 3 kids -- the first one is the most expensive as I have to get the DVDs but then after that, I just need to get new textbooks as each child gets older.

You can go on their site and request a DVD overview of the program to be sent to you so you get a feel for how it works.

It was the same way with my 6 yr old. I tried some of the more popular companies with math and then ended up buying her a math workbook by American Education Publishers (a no-name basically) and she liked that the best. I also like to do math with her by typing out a few problems on our own worksheets and letting her solve them.

I'm so glad for this post. I read it all last night. I have been so inconsitant...granted DD is not even four yet and I'm 30weeks preggo...but I was getting a bit nervous about the future and if I could do it. I did join FlyLady last night and am looking forward to the change in me with housework and homeschooling. Thanks again for all the great posts and for the original poster being so honest in her struggle!!!!

How is everyone doing?

We were plugging along until we got off track last month. Ds was in a play and our schedule was all about that for a week or two. So I'm working on getting back on track. Today will be day 3 this week, so we'll need to do school one day this weekend to get the 4 days this week. I need to get back in the habit of doing math first since that's the least favorite subject and we sometimes don't get around to it once we start reading. We're moving a long faster when we do it though, because I'm doing the writing.
