reading before writing / explode the code

We use Explode the Code for Reading. Now I'm on ds#2 who is showing signs of wanting / being ready to read, but not so much to write (at least not in any kind of structured way!).

Anyone taught / nurtured the reading before the writing? Seems like the logical next step for him.

I'm thinking about using the ETC materials but not expect any writing unless he really wants to.

Just need to be reassured, I guess! Thank you!

My ds has been using Headsprout for reading for about a month now. He learned his letters names and sounds very early and had been showing a great deal of interest in learning to read. It's all computer based and there is no handwriting portion. My ds is only just now switching from a fist grip to a tripod grip and doesn't show any interest in learning to write yet.

yea, i would recommend readingeggs.com or headsprout.com in lieu of a curriculum that requires writing (or starfall.com or anything without a handwriting emphasis, yk?). just my opinion.

DD has been reading fluently for quite a while now. She doesn't write a lot, but is becoming more interested in writing. For her, it's been a natural progression.

We used ETC, starting when DS was four. He wasn't writing, so I wrote what he told me to write, and sometimes we skipped the writing pages altogether. Sometimes he wanted to do the writing, so he did it himself.
