Non-CNM midwife in Nebraska (near Hastings or Kearney)

I know midwives are illegal in NE, but I was hoping there was an underground midwife in the area? If there is, would someone be willing to PM the info? We are frantically looking for a place to move, and DH had family in Hastings. But I'm due in March and although we're currently planning a UC, I'd like to have some midwife contacts in the area.

Thanks!

Midwives are not illegal in NE, it is illegal for a CNM to attend a hb in NE. We have 2 places here in Omaha that have CNMs who deliver in hospitals. You might check out http://www.mommythink.com/ I'm not sure if she has anything much for the Western part of the state though. Contact NE Friends of Midwives too through yahoo.

Oh! I thought CPM's were illegal and only CNM's were allowed in Nebraska. Did that change? I'm only interested in a homebirth, and wouldn't want to be assisted by a CNM anyway. Thanks for the info.

This is the article I got my info from: http://www.nemidwives.org/tidbits/madelyn-doyle.php
I've been having a hard time finding more up to date info on CPM's.

amy - what are you ding in NE?!?!?

Anyhow, the status of CPMs is unclear in NE. The law clearly states that CNMs cannot help with homebirths.

I highly recommend that you find a midwife who can be at the birth, even if she is hands-off ... because, well, that is just my opinion.

look up Nebraska Friends of Midwives and contact Laura Leggitt (I think that is the correct spelling) for additional information.

Take care.

We're not in Nebraska yet. But we may have no choice. Where we were planning on moving to fell apart at the last minute, so we are scrambling with only 3 weeks left before we have to leave. We are also looking at going up to Denver, but the COL is so much higher there I don't see anyway we're going to save enough in the next few weeks to be able to find a rental, pay the deposit, deposits for utilities, etc. But DH's father lives in Hastings, and rental costs he's been finding a lot lower... would make it easier to start a rental. I really don't want to go though.

Hi Amy!
I saw your post on NfOM so I came over here to "check yout out"!
I don't know if there are any DEM's or CPM's practicing in central NE, but I know there is one that travels to NE on occasion and there is at least one in NE but I'm not sure if she's practicing at the moment.
I had an UC 20 monts ago but my mom came (from Kearney - she had 9 homebirths - 7 UC due to no midwives), so I felt pretty comfortable with it. My birth was too fast to get to a CNM anyway since the closest one to me is 80 miles.

I see you're pretty against a CNM at this point but if you're looking for a back up, I highly recommend Barb in Hastings

As far as the laws in NE, It is not legal for CNM's to attend home births, and DEM's/CPM's are not regulated so they run the risk of being charged with "practicing medicine without a liscence". Not many are willing to take that risk as I'm sure you can imagine!

If you look into thr suburbs of Denver (downtown denver is insanely priced!) it's not as bad I don't know what your budget is though so I could be wrong. Northglenn, Lakewood, Arvada are resonably priced and there are many qualified and wonderful CPM/RMs. Good luck with your move and your search.

We have been looking into the suburbs, but we need a 3 bedroom house or duplex (not apartment) that accepts pets and costs no more than $550 per month. Those don't exist up around Denver. DH is expecting to get a job paying about $11-12 an hour, maybe up to $13 if he's lucky. And that needs to support a family of 4 (soon to be 5).

Ouch! Money just doesn't go far enough anymore! I know we pay $675 for our 2 bedroom apartment. I wish you the best of luck on your search! : for you.

It's a bit of a drive, but you *could* drive down to the Birth and Women's Center in Topeka, Kansas. I used to work there as a nurse. We occasionally get clients from the southeast part of Nebraska.

They accept some insurances, will work with you on a payment plan, and are really nice people in general. The phone number is 785-232-6950, or you can pm me with questions.
