Nativity ideas

Hi,

I am looking for some ideas on how to make a nativity scene with my 5 year old. Perferably it would not be dangerous for my 2 year old. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You could paint wooden figures pretty easily. I think that'd be safe for the 2 year old, since you wouldn't be cutting or hot gluing or sewing or the like. I suppose choking would be an issue if your figures are small!

We did one paper doll style last year with construction paper. My DD had a ton of fun.

That is a good idea. DS2 doesn't really eat inappropriate things anymore.

We did that last year or the year before. I was actually looking for something that we could get out again next year. Thanks for your suggestion, though.

What about making modeling dough sculture ones? If you use a recipe that you can bake it'll last just this side of forever.

When my kids were young, we used Styrofoam spheres placed on top of cardboard cones. We covered the forms with cloth soaked in paper mache solution (flour & water). The kids draped the fabric and embellished with different twines, trimmings (pipe cleaner for the halo) and let dry. I then spray painted with antique gold paint.

We've had these somewhere between 15 & 20 years & while they look a little rustic, still include them in our display.

Somebody was looking for recs on where to buy wooden bendy dolls recently - it would definitely be more expensive but you could buy them and dress them up with fabric scraps or ribbons or whatnot... could be fun, but like I said, expensive.
I have a printed panel that you're supposed to cut out the Nativity figures, but I wouldn't do that with DS's help.
How about a felt board Nativity scene? My 2 (4.5 and 2) LOVE cutting out stuff with scissors, and the 2 yr doesn't cut neatly but we let her shred leftovers with safety scissors while my son and I cut on the lines. Shapes could be either out of felt, or out of pieces you color and cut out of paper and then stick sandpaper or felt or velcro on the backs, or I've even heard of buying interfacing and tracing pictures onto it and coloring in with colored pencils and cutting out the shapes (did i hear that here? I dunno, haven't tried it yet, but I know I saw it somewhere!)

We made one like this when I was little.
My mom still puts it out for the grandkids to play with, and it has held ud pretty well.

My mama had the best 3 wise men made out of beer bottles!! Yes beer bottles. Her aunt took 3 empty bottles put on styrofoam heads and used felt around the bottle for the clothes. They were/are awesome!!
