Great Halifax family doctor rec. needed

Hello fellow Haligonians!!

I'm moving to Halifax for the end of November, and would like to find a family doctor that is AWESOME! You know the one I'd like, treats the mind/body, doesn't always reach for the RX pad, okay with someone being vegan etc. I wont be using this Dr. for having children, so no issue there, but obviously want a Dr. that supports breastfeeding.

Do you have any recommendations, is your family practitioner wonderful and practices a holistic approach?

I'm planning ahead, because if NS is anything like Vancouver, BC, we will be on a wait list for some time, or will be shopping around forever (I've never had a family Dr in Vancouver the entire 20 years I've been here).

Thanks!!

I know my MW mentioned one they tend to refer clients to during their pregnancies. Not too sure if this doc is taking on new patients or what she's like though. I'll pick my MW's brain when I meet with ehr early next month if you like.

I don't think any of the doctors names the midwives gave me (to OP, I know Little Peanut in real life, we use same midwives) are taking on new patients...they just do prenatal/birth shared care and then refer you back to your original family doc. Possibly that might have changed, but just a heads up...

There is a list of docs taking new patients, you might try checking out some of those names on ratemds.com and seeing what you come up with. Our family doc is great but she is closed to new patients (we managed to get in with her by some stroke of luck).

If you want to PM me I can give you their names (my shared care doc for my homebirth, and current doc) and you can call when you get here just to check or at least put your name on a waiting list...

Dr. AJ (That's Dr Jayabarathan). Park Victoria. She's awesome, although I don't know if she's taking patients or not, but she's very gentle, empathetic, caring, not too quick to prescribe anything, and not at all judgmental about non-vaxing or extended breastfeeding etc--in fact, she's very supportive of breastfeeding, and didn't blink an eye when I went in for my first appointment and started nursing an almost 4 year old. I went in yesterday with my newborn for the well-baby visit, and she could see right away that the person who wasn't well was me, not the baby. And yes, I would say she treats mind/body, not just body.

Anyway, a large number of my circle of friends now see her, word of mouth spread when the practice first opened. I don't think you'll hear any of us complain about her.

ETA: Just wanted to add that the first thing Dr AJ said to me when I went to see her after I found out I was pregnant with my DD was "have you thought about a doula? Or maybe even a midwife?". That's a big deal for a family GP in Halifax, to recommend a doula or a midwife.

Here's the list for docs taking patients:
http://www.gov.ns.ca/health/physicians/

It's voluntary, so many physicians don't go on it even if they're taking. It helps to call directly.

Thanks everyone!

I'll be making some calls soon, and getting on a few lists (no rush really, there are always walk in's).

Thanks again,
I really want a good doctor

I've had some great docs at walk-ins. And some not so great!

That's my doc, too...it seems to me she isn't taking new patient anymore, but I might be wrong on that. Like I said in my PP, definitely worth calling to ask!

And as an aside...congrats on your new babe, Alison!

They have a new doc in the practice too, she may be taking patients, I don't know.

Seems to me that everybody I know goes to Dr. AJ!

Thanks for the congrats. It didn't go the way I wanted, but DD is sweet and lovely.

I think that Debbie started that word-of-mouth chain--she told me and Charlene, we told some others, they told their friends....

However, she's a great doctor, and a lovely person!
