How do you fasten homesewn diapers?

I am embarking on making my own diapers and was hoping others who have done/do this could share how they fasten theirs. I was hoping to make it adjustable w/o velcro. I was thinking about a line of buttons across the tummy with button holes and the left and right side. I haven't seen any diapers with buttons and was wondering what the draw backs were.

Thanks for any opinions

I used buttons for a while to fasten my crocheted wool covers, but I used a snappi to fasten diapers. If your fabric isn't conducive to getting a snappi to grip it, you can add patches of looser weave fabric where you expect the snappi to go.

Sorry to butt in, but could you give me an idea of what fabrics are/are not snappi-able?

Anything that has enough space between the fibers, or ability to stretch to allow some space for the teeth of the snappi to grip, is snappi-able. Prefold twill, birdseye, most knits, terrycloth, etc. are all snappi-able. Flannel or a cotton broadcloth type material (like what quilts are made of) is not snappi-able or would be very hard to snappi.

I prefer snaps for mine, but they require a special snap press (you can't use the snaps you would use on baby clothes, like you find at Joanns). You can use Aplix (like velcro, but don't use velcro, it won't hold up to all the washing) but I don't like it because it gets tangled in the wash with stuff. good luck!

We pin!

I currently use diaper pins...which I am eager to not use anymore....I need to put the velcro on my dipes.

I can tell you that hair pins do not work.....lol.
I could not find my diaper pins, so I decided to try hair pins.....
Obviously she wiggled it undone....it may work for a new new newborn that does not wiggle much....in case you wanted to know....lol

I tried pins, then aplix (diaper-quality velcro), and ended up having a wahm make my dipes with snaps. The pins were a pain on my thicker dipes (but sooo cute on prefolds), and my dd kept unfastening the hook and loop. You may be able to find a local mama to put snaps on for you if you check the cloth diaper boards.

Are you using the Rita's Rump pattern?

I used Snappis on mine until I got Aplix from Kayla's Cloth Kits.

What happens if you use snaps like you'd get at JoAnns (such as snap tape). Do they fall apart? What is Aplix. I am using a pattern I got from a magazine. Thanks for everyone's input.
