Who makes big, unpainted architectural blocks??

Does anyone know a manufacturer for those nice, huge, unpainted wooden blocks, the kind with cubes, rectangles, and arches that you can use to really build stuff? I know M&D, plan toys, and Spiel und Holz all make them, but I can't tell if they're the really big ones, like you used to find in kindergartens (back when kids got to play in kindergarten.) We have a nice set of M&D blocks, but they are small, and the painted surface is too slippery to allow much building.

This site does and also has free plans to make your own. Pricey but looks quality. I haven't personally bought from them.

www.grandrivertoys.com has a set (well, several sets that we've combined into one) of wooden blocks. They're simple, just wooden squares/ rectangles and you can get a small set of arches and pillars too. A family I babysat for 10 years ago had them, and they're still in great condition though they got a lot of use!

Maple Landmark and Beka both make them also.

Thanks, those are really nice! The Barklay are just what I had in mind, but $$. The Grand River Toys blocks look great, and are very reasonable, but they are made in China, which isn't my first choice.

Has anyone seen the Spiel und Holz 60 pc architectural blocks? They look nice and aren't too expensive, but I haven't seen anything to indicate how big they are.

we have this set from Melissa and Doug and DD really likes them and gets a lot of use out of them... they may have been made in China though, not really sure. The big wooden box they came with is really handy.

Also check out Discount School Supply... when I taught preschool we used to get lots of stuff through there- pretty reasonable prices, but again quite possibly from china

We have the Maple Landmark ones from here

Their prices are better than anywhere else I found at the time. I happened to find them when they were having a sale and got the advanced set for about $65.

I have a set from Community Playthings- they were well worth what I spent for them ten years ago. My youngest still uses them to build forts for his action figures.

Craft Cubes

What you are showing in your picture is called "Craft Cubes" and these are available on the internet from a wide variety of sources (including ourselves). They are used by people for numerous purposes including as toys - but also for making picture puzzles, homemade alphabet blocks, in engineering classes, &c. They can be gotten in every size by 1/8ths from 1/2 inch to about 2-1/2 inches and as they are generally made from offfall from other operations, they are very cheap. Simply search for "Craft Cubes" on Google or eBay or visit our web site for the full range.

Thank you, but I'm confused. Are you replying to my op? I didn't post a picture, and I don't think you're writing about what I had in mind.
