Has anyone formed an LLC? Any tips to share? How did you do it (through the state office, through a lawyer, through a site like legalzoom.com, etc.)?

I formed an LLC in 2004, through a local attorney with experience in business legalities. After I saw all the paperwork she had to fill out and the wonderful explanation of an LLC and what I needed to do, that she had put together, I was very happy that I hired a professional to handle the process.

*Sigh* Sounds expensive. I guess we need to get that figured out.

I believe the total cost for me was around $600.

Hmmm...not as bad as I was thinking.

it depends on your state. The secretary of states office should have a website, I was able to do mine all online, it was super easy. Mine was $105 to do it myself and just out of curiousity just now I looked it up on legalzoom and it would have been $240 through them. Good luck!

On a related note, does anyone know of a website that gives good information about LLC's in general (taxes, how to use it to your advantage, etc.)? I know my grandfather ran a bunch of expenses through his LLC for years saving a bunch in taxes (I'm guessing it was all on the up and up since he was very concerned about ethics) but he has dementia now or I'd be on the phone to him.

Don't use a lawyer. Go to bizfilings.com or any one of a number of sites that does it much cheaper and easier. Go to Nolo.com to get legal books anyone can understand. Don't hire lawyers for easy stuff.

Your library should have lots of books on the subject, especially for your state.

It's super easy in my state of Virginia. Check out your state website. There should be a phone number you can call and ask if you have any questions.

I filled out one page application downloaded on the website and sent in $100 and that's it! It was very simple. I asked all kinds of silly quesitons over the phone to make sure it was as simple as that. And when I call over the phone, there is NO "press1 for this question, press 2 for that question." I got a person on the phone right away and she was able to answer all my questions.

Check your local and state website for information!

In NJ, the filing fee to do it is 250. It really wasn't very hard, but after visiting NOLO, I think I want a more legal document to make sure I've done everything correctly.
