The birth...(some post birth trauma mentioned)

I went from a 3 to delivery in 1 hour and five minutes. I was checked at 7:40 and was still at a 3. I asked to get into the whirlpool tub. I got out of the tub at 8:45 because I started to feel more pressure. I had my husband help me out and to the bed and as soon as I lay down, I could feel the baby descending into the birth canal. My husband called for the nurse. As she came into the room, Charlotte's head was coming out. She pulled the emergency cord and told me not to push...um I wasn't pushing at all. She was trying to get her gloves on when the next contraction hit and Charlotte slid out into the world. I didn't have to push even once. The nurse was freaked out so I reached down and helped to pull her up onto my chest where she stayed until the doctor arrived about 10-15 minutes later.

She had low blood sugar after birth (30) and a low temp, but the nurse let me do skin to skin contact instead of keeping her under the warmer so we could try breastfeeding right away. Her temp went up and after a few nursing sessions, her blood sugar was up to 48 which the nurse was happy with.

I was doing really well after birth...no tears, skids, etc.. and the placenta came out in one complete piece. The doctor did make it in time to deliver the placenta. LOL I had minimal bleeding and everything seemed to be going well. We started some pitocin due to my history of hemorrhaging a few hours after birth. A few hours later, I still started to hemorrhage and passed a HUGE clot that was as big as my placenta. The nurse weighed it and it was almost a pound. I started to gush blood and huge clots after that and the doctor was paged 911. He wasn't answering so they called the back up doctor who came right away. I had a total of four shots of methargine(sp) into my upper thighs and they injected more pit into my IV line. They gave me another medication to stop the bleeding as well, but I don't remember the name at the moment.

They were prepping the operating room for an emergency D&C, but luckily the bleeding seemed to slow and my uterus seemed to be getting smaller. I had a catheter inserted because I wasn't allowed to move until the next morning. That really hurt on those sensitive girly parts that just delivered a baby! They had to have three different people try before they could get it in because everything was still swollen from the birth.

It was a rough night, but by the next morning, the bleeding had slowed and I was able to get the catheter out and try to get up and around. Later that afternoon, I was finally able to stop the pit and to get the IV out. Blood transfusion was discussed because my hemoglobin was really low (6.5) but I decided to wait and try iron supplements at home for a few days because I wasn't having any light headedness.

We are home now and I am trying to rest as much as possible with four other kiddos. Charlotte is nursing beautifully and I am hoping that my milk will come in sometime today because she is nursing every hour or so for about 20 minutes at this point.

I'm off to read all of the birth stories that I missed. Can't wait to hear about all of the other little ones who were born while I was away.
